标题: og 25

The end of the eighteenth century saw the emergence of prize-stock breeding, with individual bulls and cows receiving awards, fetching unprecedented prices, and excite[S1] d enormous interest whenever they were put on show.

(A) excited

(B) it excited

(C) exciting

(D) would exciteC

(E) it had excited

Choice C is best. 1The third verb phrase in the series describing bulls and cows should have the same grammatical form as the first two. Only choice C has a present participle (or “-ing” form) that is parallel with the two preceding verbs, receiving and fetching. Instead of the present participle, choices A and B use the past tense (excited), choice D uses an auxiliary verb (would excite), and choice E uses the past perfect tense (had excited). 2Additionally, the incorrect verb tenses in B and E are introduced by a pronoun, it, that lacks a logical noun referent.

这里“with +名词(代词)+分词+介词短语” 是独立结构,表示伴随状况,可看成状语,修饰主句。 大致相当于:

The end of the eighteenth century saw the emergence of prize-stock breeding, as individual bulls and cows received awards, fetched unprecedented prices, and excited enormous interest whenever they were put on show.

独立结果和插入语如何区别?

我的理解,插入语是独立结构的一种吧。这里with...也可叫插入语。但我觉得不只是修饰prize-stock breeding。

以下是引用colacat在2005-2-7 14:25:00的发言:
独立结果和插入语如何区别?

独立成分 (薄冰英语语法)

可做独立成分的通常有三种词语, 即感叹语, 呼语和插入语。

1)      。 感叹语, 多置于句首,有的亦可置于句中或句末。 如;

(1)   Oh, John, will you come into my room, please?

        噢, 约翰, 请你到我房间来好吗?

(2)   You’re joking, eh?

       你是开玩笑, 是吧?

2)      。 呼语, 可置于句首,句末或句中, 如;

(1)   John, you are wanted on the phone.

       约翰, 有你的电话。

(2)   Good-bye, everybody!

       大伙儿再见!

3)      。 插入语, 指插在句中的词语, 如;

(1)   The peasant woman receives nothing, since whatever she earns is the

property -as she herself is- of the husband who has bought her as his

      wife.

                        农民妇女一无所得,因为她所挣得的-像她本人一样-都归将她买

                        来做妻子的丈夫。

(2)   Business, he reflected, appeared as brisk as ever.

      在他想,生意似乎一直很兴隆。( he reflected 亦可看作是句子状

      语) 。

我这唯一带在身边的语法书,而且已经是老古董了,还是袖珍本,如果解释和例子太过肤浅和过时了的话,大家可不要见怪哟!
