15. M: It is almost impossible to find a person between the ages of 85 an 90 who primarily uses the left hand.

Q: Seventy to ninety years ago, however, children were published for using their left hands to eat or to write and were forced to use their right hands.

Q's response serves to counter any use by M of the evidence about 85 to 90 year olds in supports of which one of the following hypotheses?

(A) Being born right-handed confers a survival advantage.

(B) Societal attitudes toward handedness differ at different times.

(C) Forcing a person to switch from a preferred hand is harmless.

(D) Handedness is a product of both genetic predisposition and social pressures.

(E) Physical habits learned in school often persist in old age.

答案是A

Sorry, I also made a confusion on this question.

The DEFINITION of hypothesis :   idea ot suggestion that is based on known facts and is used as a basis for reasoning or further investigation.

Therefore,

A,  Since few 80-90 years old are left-handed (fact), then it is possible that being born of right-handed confers a survival advantage

D,   Since few 80-90 years old are left-handed,   then handness is both genetic predisposition and social presure

Q's response serves to counter the hypothesis of first sentense, and support the hypothesis in second sentense.

Q's response serves to counter any use by M of the evidence about 85 to 90 year olds in supports of which one of the following hypotheses

是否可这样理解:M用“It is almost impossible to find a person between the ages of 85 an 90 who primarily uses the left hand”来支持他的假设---即答案各选项。 Q's response“Seventy to ninety years ago, however, children were published for using their left hands to eat or to write and were forced to use their right hands”可以起到削弱那一个假设? “Being born right-handed confers a survival advantage.” Q 认为有一部分出生时为right-handed,但后来强制改为LEFT-HANDED 的也在the ages of 85 an 90 的人里面。故weaken the hypotheses that Being born right-handed confers a survival advantage.

Don't get confused, this is just a question asking from difference angle for a possible inference M is implying. BTW, the answer A is not an assumption at all. An assumption should be served as a sure inference (100%), not a possible one.

Thanks for reminding, dorbear!   I quite agree with you.

to be rigorous, this question could not be inference question. Because for inference question, the correct choice must be true if the stimulus is true, however, choice A is only possibly true based on what M speaks.

M can use the evidence in the stimulus to prove many of positions. However, what Q says in the stimulus confines M's position to choice A in order to effectively argue against M's position.

In my opinion, this question can not be categorized as any typical question, but is somehow similar to weaken question in meaning, or named as converse weaken question, which means the question asks you to find a  confined choice that can be weakened by Q.
