Offer

H1b and the school you get into are completely different things. All employers will want you to first use your opt because it is much faster for you to get. Most for profit companies can only apply for h1b between April and oct and the spots usually fill up by may/June. That's means your first year of work will definitely have to be in opt since you will not make the deadline if you graduate in may. The opt lasts for one year with option for renewal as long as you remain employed. In your second year your company will apply for your h1b as long as you are doing a good job. For some jobs, the company will not sponsor h1b regardless of what school you are from or what school you went to. So when you are applying for jobs, definitely make sure to check this. The only exception to this rule are non profits. Non profits like most universities, charities, hospitals etc can sponsor h1b whenever. However these places usually only sponsor for very senior level positions of research positions. They also pay much less than private industry.

I guess the conclusion is, just because you didn't get into a top twenty school doesn't mean you will not get h1b sponsorship. This will depend more on the position you applied for and your work performance. If you are bad at your job in the first year, you will not get h1b sponsorship even if you graduated from harvard.

not true. you can definitely apply h1b at the year of graduation if you get offer before April 1 from a company has h1b sponsorship.

but I agree that school has little to do with h1b. Industry is most important factor. From easy to difficult:

IT > Consulting/Finance > Industrial > Media/Art

Sure .....You can apply...but you need corporate sponsorship...and generally no company is going to do it...There is no body that stands there and says NO...but good luck finding a company with an HR team willing to do it..largely also because they would have to wait longer on your start time than an OPT. The only time I've seen this happen is a small start up for engineers.

you think so or you have proof?

All companies I know (my classmates joined), including big banks and IT firms are pushing you to get H1B at first year since there is no guarantee you would get it the second year by lottery. You are not encouraged to use OPT unless you have good reasons.

If your company doesn't apply H1B for you in first year and you failed to get H1B lottery in second year, it is a loss to the company who did a lot of training and provide sign-on bonus/relocation to you. In order to retain the talent, company then needs to spend much more to relocate you to international office for 1 year (more than two friends relocated to HK for a year b/c h1b issue)

What you said only applied to smaller firms, low paid job or media/art related companies. Those companies don't traditionally sponsor H1b and they are not sure if they want to do that. So they postpone it as much as possible.

Trust me, for any 100K+ job, visa application fee/attorney fee is a small fraction of total cost of hiring
