答案选D，没有异议，但是D中的gathering information about its size and the curvature of its surface，我理解应该是sailed around the Earth的伴随状语，但是为什么gathering前面没有逗号呢？那不就成了Earth的后置定语吗？这样不是会引起歧义吗？

有没有逗号都无区别啊，前面不是完整主谓，这样无论有木有逗号 v-ing都应该是修饰最近的名词earth
这样不就歧义了么？？？虽然语义上很明显是伴随
还真没碰到过这种

先回答楼主问题，假设有逗号的话，句子就变成了Like the great navigators who first sailed around the Earth， gathering information about its size and the curvature of its surface, astronomers have made...
那么请问， gathering information about its size and the curvature of its surface到底是修饰‘the great navigators‘ 还是’astronomers‘呢？ ‘，Ving’形式在这里就变成了夹心修饰，造成歧义。
至于gathering在这里容易被看做是earth的后置定语，我觉得应该不会，第一，这里是like形式的比较，平行结构严谨，其次，毕竟GMAT允许人们利用常识的，earth是不会gathering的，只有人才可以。就像I like apple more than orange.一样，没有人会认为orange会like apple.
