标题: 过去式和过去完成时的不解

Dressed as a man and using the name Robert Shurtleff, Deborah Sampson, the first woman to draw a soldier's pension, joined the Continental Army in 1782 at the age of 22 was injured three times, and was discharged in 1783 because she had become too ill to serve.我理解这里用had become的过去完成时态表示在1783年之前她被discharge之前就已经有了“病的太重以至于不能服役”的状态并且这个状态一直持续到了1873年她被discharge，有个问题是这个had become如果换成was那么这句话该怎么理解呢？was too ill to serve这个状态和was discharged in 1873年这两个动作或者是状态哪个在先哪个在后，还是说同时发生？
请nn指点

只有过去完成时是有明确的时间前后节点
过去时是描述过去某个时间点
只能通过状语和逻辑来判断先后

可以理解成她被discharge的那个时候 she was ill
但研究非正确答案真的没意义的..

嘿嘿，无意中看到manhattangmat上有人对这点的提问，又看到ron的解释有点不理解，ron的解释：
In this sentence, either "was" or "had become" would make sense. Only the latter indicates that at one point she wasn't too sick to serve—while "was too ill" allows the possibility that she was sick the whole time—but both are perfectly sensible in context.
但是ron在回答另一个学生提问的问题（I don't feel the "was too ill to serve" is so wrong as there's no obvious implication that time order of events must be shown in the non-underlined part .）时又说i see where you're coming from here. however, the past participle (described above) is definitely an error.
那么这里如果用was的话到底对不对呢？
如果对的话就是找您上个回答说的那样用was就是表示she was ill的时候was discharged了？
请nn指点

要理解上下文啊.......
RON说的 the past participle is definitely an error 说的是 "injuried 3 times"
那个同学的问题：
“Can D be right? if we just make "Joined" and "was discharged" parallel, with "injured 3 times" as a past participle modifier?

was ill 是指过去的任何一个时间点，她都有可能是ill的，因为没有其他时间状语辅助解释
had become ill 有明确的时间序列

如果这样理解对的话，那么was ill和was charged没有时间先后顺序的话这句话改成was的话按照Ron说的还是make sense的，那该怎么理解呢？
请指点

就是说was ill仅仅是表示在过去她生病了，但具体是在was charged之前还是之后不得而知，而had become ill ...

我之前遗漏了其实因为有because这个因果关系所以一定是ill 发生在前面
就好像有before 这个连词一样
但是was 和 had been 的区别在于之后
was too ill 是说她一直病重，因为病重，所以1783被discharge, 之后还在病重
had been too ill 病重的状态截止到她被discharge, 后面不得而知

I threw the apple to the corner because the apple was rotten

真的不需要纠结一个不存在的答案
learn from the correct answer 才比较高效
