我的理解：
D中it作 to be an expatriate的形式主语， Long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate为主句的状语
我的疑问：it在主语位置优先指代Josephine Baker ，不符合逻辑

语法太烂了，求指导

Cit could move under its own power, the diesel locomotive could summon nearly full power from a cold engine almost instantly  分析C选项
Dmoving under its own power, the cold engine of the diesel locomotive could produce nearly full power almost instantly  分析D选项
Emoving under its own power, almost instantly a diesel locomotive could summon nearly full power from a cold engine  分析E选项

其中AB选项的解答有人提出形式主语it与its指代对象不一致
这种说法对吗

it 和iits 是指代对象是不一致的。
it 做形式主语指代后面 possible to move under....
具体的知识点可以参照曼哈顿语法12章 placeholder it 那一节的内容。
its 指代的是steam locomotive。
曼哈顿上讲的关于指代的ambiguous那几条rules，在实际情况中也有违背的时候

对指代我也不太清楚，都是个人理解了，希望能帮到你
