C is obviously not right, handling more....than are...这里明显是不平行的。
个人感觉从比较、平行的思路出发应该可以解决这道题。

比较对象:new comers, the precedessors

比什么: more apept at handling the responsibilites

A,B were is wrong , C , are is wrong, E , had is wrong. Instead in this case we shall use the verb as did.
