8. In late 1997, the chambers inside the pyramid of the Pharaoh Menkaure at Giza were closed to visitors for cleaning and repair due to moisture exhaled by tourists, which raised its humidity to such levels so that salt from the stone was crystallizing and fungus was growing on the walls.

其中C,D项OG的解释是The pronoun them seems to referto tourists, which is nonsensical。
我的问题是为什么C,D中的Them可能指代 tourists ，而E中的就不会有这个问题？？

D错在because of 上，because of 只能接简单架构，如果是个复杂结构，用because。
现在比较C和E哪个更好。注意未划线的部分，and fungus was growing on the walls. C中与and平行的是salt from the stone would crystallize,而E中与and平行的是salt from the stone was crystallizing。你感觉哪个更好？更平行？
salt from the stone would crystallize and fungus was growing on the walls vs. salt from the stone was crystallizing and fungus was growing on the walls
根据GMAT“优选”原则明显E更好。
至于指代问题，注意看C选项：because tourists were exhaling moisture, which had raised the humidity within them。。。which是不是非限定性定语从句修饰moisture的？是。them在which这个次级从句中，从句中的代词如果在同级找不到指代，则去上一级结构中找，此处上一级结构是because tourists were exhaling moisture，那么them指代谁？只能指代tourists。
而在E选项：because moisture exhaled by tourists had raised the humidity within them。。。exhaled by tourists是moisture的定语后置或者省略了that was的定语从句，不管是哪种，tourists都是主句次一级结构中的成分，（即使在次一级结构中tourists也是句中宾补，既不是主语也不是宾语），所以在找them的代指的时候优先在同一级去找：In late 1997, the chambers inside the pyramid of the Pharaoh Menkaure at Giza were closed to visitors for cleaning and repair,中Them可能的指代对象只有chambers。
也就是说“就近指代”指的是同级，不是不分主次的“就近指代”。

我自己以前问过这个题，后来看了别人的解释，再从逻辑上仔细想想，想明白了。

说点儿题外的，我跟外国人打交道11年了（生活上和工作上），得出一个结论：外国人智商平均值绝对低于中国人。如果英语真的博大精深，难以掌握，难度超过中文，你见过外国人算数学题吗？但凡是中国留学生去到国外的，都感觉外国同学跟中国学生无论是逻辑能力还是理解能力，都差好大一截。这几乎是共识，至少理工科绝对的。
GMAT的原则就那么几个，大家理解了，掌握了，GMAT的语法远比中国专业的语法书讲的简单。
我想说的是：我相信一个连普通中国人都难以理解的语法结构逻辑，脑子像被驴踢过一样的外国人是100%无法理解的。大家要有这个信心。

这就是为啥好多排斥非美本的学校平均GMAT低的原因么语法还是看重语义

我和 alzn2765 想法差不多。BTW，就新版的Manhattan和Gmat的出题来看，pronoun ambiguity 是一种有效性错误而非绝对性错误，所以找出更明显的其他语法错误比较重要

求教 D选项，指代问题：不考虑because of本身就错了，OG解释该选项中them指代tourists，这个要怎么解释呢？我觉得这个跟E没什么区别，D是because of moisture that was exhaled by tourists raising the humidity within them.......E是because moisture (that was) exhaled by tourists had raised the humidity within them......但是E指代却是chambers
