让我不太明白这到底是作的什么成分

其实还原回来应该是render the chemical irritant harmless. harmless是补语的成分。

还是不明白，为什么这里可以把harmless放在宾语前面，好像没有在别的地方看到过这种用法啊

不太同意沙发同学的说法~~我个人的理解如下：
enzymes are the organism's trying to metabolize, or (to) render harmless, the chemical irritant（酶是生物体尝试分解化学物质的一种结果...大概是这样的一个意思）

个人认为这里to render harmless和to metabolize是平行结构，因为他们之间用or连接
也可以把or render harmless理解成插入语吧，同意harmless作为补语

酶是生物体尝试使化学物质代谢，或者促使化学物质无害的一种结果

无论render harmless是作为插入语还是平行结构都不能理解。
插入语：
解释了harmless之后的逗号。但是，一个verb原形 + adj.的结构怎么能修饰另外一个动词？又不是名词的同位语结构。
平行结构：
harmless之后的逗号为什么存在? 是因为不能去掉逗号让harmless有可能修饰chemicl吗?

此句的精华可能在harmless之后的Comma。
首先，由于原句很复杂，先提取出选项直接修饰的从句：
The organism’s attempt to metabolize, or render harmless, the chemical irritant
其次，明确render在这里作为render + n. +adj.用，完整表达是render the chemical irritant harmless，意为使chemical irritant无害。
明确这两点之后支持Ron的结论，or (to)render harmless是平行结构，省略to。
至于为什么表达地如此拗口是因为很难找到更简单而又不影响句子正确性的表达方式。
完整句子为：
The organism’s attempt to metabolize the chemical irritant, or render the chemical irritant harmless
既然共用一个宾语自然要更简练，所以把动词提取到前面形成平行结构。同时由于render用法的特殊性不能写成如下：

只想到一种可能，Pronoun代替：
The organism’s attempt to metabolize the chemical irritant, or render it harmless
可是it指代有歧义。根据Ron关于Pronoun的帖子，it指代很宽泛，只要往前找有单数名词，以及make sense即可，此句irritant和attempt都可，最好不要这样用。
在想不到其它表达方式的情况下，render harmless之后加个Comma是最简单而又无歧义的表达方式了，虽然看着便扭。

1. render+n.+adj. 致使造成
Youcan use render with an adjective that describes a particular state to say that someone or something is changed into that state.
For example, if someone or something makes a thing harmless, you can say that they render it harmless.
2. render +n +n 给予(帮助);提供(服务) If you render someone help or service, you help them
3. render+n 宣布，作出(判决、决定或回应) When a jury or authority renders a verdict, decision, or response, they announce it.
