D changes the meaning....
....increasingly used crossbreeding....to acquire.....
Breeders increase the use of crossbreeding because they INTENT to acquire certain characteristics NOT they should.
For example, look at the following two sentences:
Sentence A: I practice basketball to improve my speed
Sentence B: I practice basketball because I should improve my speed
A and B are different because in sentence A, I am doing something because I WANT/INTENT to. In sentence B, I am doing something because I should (which is suggestive and passive).
