54. The electronics company has unveiled what it claims to be the world’s smallest network digital camcorder, the length of which is that of a handheld computer, and it weighs less than 11 ounces.
(A) to be the world’s smallest network digital camcorder, the length of which is that of a handheld computer, and it weighs
(B) to be the smallest network digital camcorder in the world, which is as long as a handheld computer, weighing
(C) is the smallest network digital camcorder in the world, which is as long as a handheld computer, and it weighs
(D) is the world’s smallest network digital camcorder, which is as long as a handheld computer and weighs D
(E) is the world’s smallest network digital camcorder, the length of which is that of a handheld computer, weighing
首先,What it claims is 是it claims what is 的转换形式,是否要用逗号隔开it claims, 即what, it claims, is? Claim to be是正确的。
60. Whereas lines of competition are clearly defined in the more established industries, in the internet industry they are blurred and indistinct , as companies that compete one day may be partners the next
A. Whereas lines of competition are clearly defined in the more established industries, in the internet industry they are blurred and indistinct, as companies that compete
B. although the lines of competition are clearly defined in industries that are more established, they are blurred and indistinct in the internet industry , as competing companies
C. the lines of competition are clearly defined in the more established industries, unlike the internet where they are blurred and indistinct , as companies that compete
D. unlike more established industries, where the lines of competition are clearly defined, they are blurred and indistinct in the internet industry, as companies that compete B
E. unlike more established industries, with clearly defined lines of competition, those of the internet industry are blurred and indistinct, as competing companies
答案:B。我选A。
B中的错误:首先,that are 应该省略(ETS的偏爱)其次,One day 和the next (day)共同作句子的状语,意思很荒谬。
63. The new sports car is heavier than usual for a performance automobile, but it is exceptional because of its high-powered engine.
A) usual
B) it is usual
C) one usually is
D) is usual D
E) has been usual
74. The studio’s retrospective art exhibit refers back to a simpler time in Amer
ican history.
(A) The studio’s retrospective art exhibit refers back to
(B) The studio’s retrospective art exhibit harkens back to
(C) The studio’s retrospective art exhibit refers to
(D) The studio’s retrospective art exhibit refers from
(E) The studio’s retrospective art exhibit looks back to
Answer: C
54. 首先,What it claims is 是it claims what is 的转换形式.
60 A 的they指代不清.
Choice (A) is incorrect. Retrospective means looking back on the past. Hence, in the phrase refers back, the word back is redundant.
Choice (B) is incorrect because harkens back is also redundant.
Choice (C) is correct. Dropping the word back eliminates the redundancy.
Choice (D) is incorrect because the preposition from is non-idiomatic.
Choice (E) is incorrect because looks back is also redundant.
(D) is the correct answer. It employs the parallel construction, 'the sports car is.... than (is) usual for a ...'. (A) is ruled out because it does not create a parallel comparison. In (B), the 'it' is redundant; so is the 'one' in (C). (E) is incorrect because of the verb tense, which should stay in the present. (D) is the best answer because it uses parallel construction.
在GWD中有类似的题,当时争论的很厉害,主要是than usual和than is usual区别。
The new sports car is heavier than (sports car) is usual for a performance automobile, but it is exceptional because of its high-powered engine.
对前半句的for a performance automobile应该如何理解.
更正一下,可能的理解是than (what) is usual for a performance automobile. 这里可能不用than usual的原因就是会造成歧义,是what (car) usual for a performance automobile还是usual new sports car for a performance automobile
A grasshopper is larger than normal for a member of the insect class; its abdomen can be up to two inches in length, as opposed to the one-inch-long abdomen of the average insect.
a.normal
b. is normal
c. was normal
d. they normally are B
e they are normally
The Parthenon is larger than usual for a Doric temple, with eight columns on the short sides and seventeen on the long ones rather than the typical six and thirteen.
(A) usual
(B) is usual
(C) has been usual
(D) one usually is B
(E) it is usual
而og253中选the weather, which was colder and wetter than usual in some regionsutom实际想表达的就是usual weather.
The Parthenon is larger than usual: 歧义应该是出在larger和usual进行了比较. 虽然两个形容词不可比, 但是会给人疑惑.加了is就很清楚是两个Parthenon进行比较了.
回到原题, 如果不用is, 就会感觉是heavy 和usual进行比较. 所以D会更清晰.
我的理解是:The Parthenon is larger than usual可能理解比的是The Parthenon和usual Parthenon在大小程度的不同,从句义理解明显不合逻辑,The Parthenon是独有的东西不存在usual。实际比的是The Parthenon 和 what is usual for a Doric temple(也就是其他通常的Doric temple).
A usual grasshopper for a member of the insect class比大小,明显感觉不合逻辑,应该是A grasshopper 比what is usual for a member of the insect class(也就是通常的昆虫)大,分号后做了解释。
而grasshopper/Parthenon/sports car 这几题的逻辑比较对象不应该是前面提到的这几个名词.
