Isabelle: You can’t walk through that door with all of your clothes on!
Linus: What?! I’ve just come off of a 12-hour flight. I’m tired and I want to get into my own house and into my own bed.
Isabelle: I know, but you’ve just returned from McQuillanland and I’ve just read that anyone who has been there may be a carrier of a communicable disease called Niebola. It can be transmitted through casual contact, so even if you don’t have it, you could spread it.
Linus: So what am I supposed to do? Stand out here for the rest of my life?
Isabelle: Of course not. Take off your clothes.
Linus: You want me to take off my clothes in front of the house? Are you crazy?!
Isabelle: No, the best way to prevent the spread of this infectious disease is to burn clothing that has been in contact with it, and to bathe you thoroughly.
Linus: I’m not stripping down to my underwear out here.
Isabelle: But aren’t you worried about transmitting Niebola to me and everyone you know? No one is immune. You could start an epidemic!
Linus: All right, but I’m going around to the back door where no one can see me, okay?
Isabelle: Great! I’ll get your bath ready. I just have to heat the mayonnaise.
Linus: What?! You want me to take a bath in mayonnaise?
Isabelle: That’s the only way to kill Niebola.

Learning to Say “No” Is Part of Success

[Time 2]
Success is often built on a reflexive habit of saying “yes” to opportunities that come our way. We’re hungry for any chance to prove ourselves, and when we’re presented with one, we take it, even—or especially—if it seems daunting. (A lesson I learned years ago was to say yes to opportunities that made me feel nervous because the anxiety was a sign that I’d learn something useful.) We may also tend to say “yes” out of a fear that turning down an opportunity even once sends a message that we’re not interested, and we’ll stop getting additional chances in the future.

But success tends to attract bigger and better opportunities. As we succeed, a key challenge becomes prioritizing the many opportunities that present themselves. We often try to do this without saying “no” definitively—we still want to keep our options open. Inevitably, though, this results in a lack of clarity and overcommitment, and we wind up disappointing people, exhausting ourselves, or simply failing. To prevent this we need to learn to say “no” gracefully but firmly, maintaining the relationship while making it clear that this is one opportunity we’re choosing not to pursue. And success in this effort is founded on the ability to manage the emotions that come up when we close a door or extinguish an option.
【222】

[Time 3]
These emotions can be subtle: a twinge of regret, a trace of anxiety, a faint voice that whispers, “Are you sure you want to turn this down?” We often respond reflexively to such emotions, driven to eliminate the discomfort they evoke. So we say “yes” and feel some relief—until later, when we realize the costs of the commitment we’ve now made. A critical step in managing these emotions is training ourselves to resist that initial reflexive response; I often describe this to clients and students as “becoming more comfortable with discomfort.” We notice the discomfort provoked by the possibility of saying “no,” and yet we can tolerate it. We’re not compelled to take action to eliminate it.

There’s no magic formula for saying “no” more effectively, but here are three steps that can help:

1. Slow down. Feelings of anxiety generated by the possibility of saying “no” can escalate into a full-blown threat response, an emotional state in which we have diminished capacity to process information and consider options. Slowing down the pace of an interaction or a decision-making process can allow us to catch up and make the choice that’s right for us, not merely the choice that alleviates our anxiety in the moment.
2. Recognize our emotional cues. We experience many emotions before we recognize them in conscious awareness, but feelings often have physiological markers that can help us identify and name the emotion sooner. Once we’re aware of an emotion, we can take action to influence how we respond. What do we feel—physically—when we consider saying “no”?
3. Practice. Saying “no” is like any other interpersonal skill—it feels clumsy and awkward at first, and we improve only with repeated effort.

Article 2:
4 Predictions About 2014 That Are Wrong
[Time 4]
We’d all like to know what will happen in 2014, and the thoughtful journalists at the Economist magazine have published an intriguing set of predictions that give us some clues, as they do every year.

Some of them are quite a stretch, however. So in the spirit of respectful debate (which the Economist basically encourages with every issue) here are five things the magazine thinks will happen next year that probably won’t:

A coming “tech-lash.” The idea is that a tech backlash will occur as ordinary folks begin to view tech barons such as Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Ellison and Sean Parker as greedy villains akin to Wall Street banksters and heartless Big Oil environment wreckers. Doubtful. Superrich tech titans have shown themselves to be plenty crass and dismissive of the little guy, but with an important difference: Many of the most popular tech offerings, such as Facebook (FB), Twitter (TWTR), LinkedIn (LNKD) and Pandora (P), remain free to the public or cheap if you upgrade. And new services come along all the time to keep the supply-demand equation balanced in favor of consumers. Oil companies and banks suffer from the perception that they gouge consumers and enrich themselves at the public’s expense. Zuckerberg, et. al. don’t.

The Twitter IPO will produce many more social-media offerings. Twitter got right what Facebook got wrong, with a flawless IPO that valued the company at a vertiginous $25 billion or so. The thinking now is that many more social-media startups — think Snapchat, for instance — will follow with even richer IPOs. However, Twitter stock has drifted down by about 6% since the IPO, while the broader market has climbed by nearly 3%. There’s plenty of evidence that Twitter’s lack of profitscould soon bring the stock back to earth. Plus there’s the broader risk of an overall market correction that could cool the market for all IPOs. Twitter may be a solid business, but it's not necessarily a trendsetter.
【323】

[Time 5]
“Many will wonder if central banks know what they are doing.” Ya think? This would have been a great prediction in 2008 or 2009. As for the Federal Reserve — the most powerful central bank of all — critics have questioned and even lampooned its policies for several years now. The Fed’s penchant for “printing money” was a big issue in the 2012 U.S. elections. Criticism intensified this year as the Fed gave a head fake about pulling back on quantitative easing — which sent bond markets into a frenzy — then basically said “never mind” a few months later. A sizeable posse of economists and business leaders already feel the Fed has lost credibility by keeping money too loose for too long. So while this prediction isn't wrong, per se, it's just dated.

China will become “top dog. ” There’s no doubt the size of China’s economy will eventually eclipse that of the United States, if only by virtue of its massive population. But whether that will automatically make China a global leader is highly debatable. China still has hundreds of millions of rural citizens living at or below subsistence levels, and 2013 exposed levels of inbred corruption in the communist government that makes the childish politicians in Washington look positively statesmanlike. For all their flaws, Europe and the United States have proven institutions such as the rule of law and relatively transparent governments that remain huge holes in the Chinese system. The demise of the West is a popular economic meme, but Monty Python could have written the ending: “I’m not dead yet.”

The Economist makes many other predictions that are incisive and entertaining, on far-flung topics including the rise of Africa, Scotland’s bid for independence, reusable rockets, India’s chronic toilet shortage and William Shakespeare’s 450th birthday. It’s hard to find so many through-provoking forecasts in one place, even if a few of them turn out to be wrong.

On 50th anniversary of JFK death, Dallas holds its first memorial
[Time 6]
(Reuters) - Dallas will observe the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's assassination on Friday with its first official ceremony to mark the event seen as the darkest day in the city's history.

Kennedy will be remembered with prayers, a speech by Mayor Mike Rawlings and military jets flying over the city's Dealey Plaza, where Kennedy was shot.

The ceremony, which starts at 11:30 a.m. (1730 GMT), is set to coincide with the time of day Kennedy's motorcade passed through packed downtown streets 50 years ago. Only 5,000 people will be able to view ceremonies in Dealey Plaza but video screens will be set up throughout downtown.

For previous anniversaries, conspiracy theorists who say there was a plot to kill Kennedy have usually taken over Dealey Plaza, denouncing the official line that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone and fired three shots at Kennedy from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository building.

They have come to Dallas in force this year but will not be part of the official event.

"His death forever changed our city, as well as the world," Rawlings said in a statement ahead of the anniversary. "We want to mark this tragic day by remembering a great president with the sense of dignity and history he deserves."

Dallas was seen as a pariah city for years after the November 22, 1963, assassination and avoided any commemoration. That stigma started to fade decades ago and now, The Sixth Floor Museum in the former Texas School Book Depository is one of the city's largest tourists attractions.

"Dallas came under a great deal of international criticism after the assassination. It was called the 'City of Hate,'" said Stephen Fagin, associate curator The Sixth Floor Museum.

Amid the Cold War paranoia and simmering racial tension of the 1960s, a small but influential group of arch-conservatives protested Kennedy's visit to Texas, saying he was soft on communism and should stay away.

In recent days, the city removed a large "X" embedded into the pavement by an unknown person or people that marked the spot on Elm Street where Kennedy was shot in the head.

The "X" had been seen as tasteless by many while the official observance - a small plaque on the plaza's noted "grassy knoll" - had been criticized as inadequate.

After thousands of books, news articles, TV shows, movies and documentaries on that fateful day in Dallas, surveys show a majority of Americans still believe in the conspiracy theories, distrusting evidence pointing to Oswald as the sole killer.

Hugh Ayensworth, a reporter in Dealey Plaza 50 years ago who witnessed the assassination and also saw Oswald shot dead by Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby, has spent a lifetime investigating the killings and debunking suspected plots.

"We can't accept very comfortably that two nobodies, two nothings - Lee Harvey Oswald and Jack Ruby - were able to change the course of world history," he told Reuters.

Part III: Obstacle
Article 4:
The man who used to walk on water
[Time 7]
AN AMERICAN president’s most important power is not the veto pen or the ability to launch missiles. It is the bully pulpit. When a president speaks, the world listens. That is why Barack Obama’s credibility matters. If people do not believe what he says, his power to shape events withers. And recent events have seriously shaken people’s belief in Mr Obama. At home, the chaos of his health reform has made it harder for him to get anything else done. Abroad, he is seen as weak and disengaged, to the frustration of America’s allies.

Not all the barbs aimed at Mr Obama are fair. Our special report this week on American foreign policy notes that he inherited two miserable wars. He began his first term during the worst recession in 80 years. And the Republicans who shut down parts of the federal government last month and flirted recklessly with default bear much of the blame for Washington’s disarray. But the excuse that it is all someone else’s fault is wearing thin. Under Mr Obama, America seems rudderless and its power is being squandered. A more engaged president would handle the Republicans—and the rest of the world—with more skill.

The debacle of Obamacare has gravely weakened the president (see article). In the days before October 1st, when the online health-insurance exchange opened, he seemed blithely unaware that anything was amiss. Using it would be “real simple”, he told voters in Maryland on September 26th; it would work the “same way you shop for a TV on Amazon”. Alas, it did not. Millions tried to log on; few succeeded. The website was never properly tested, it transpires. Although this was Mr Obama’s most important domestic reform, no one was really in charge. Crucial specifications were changed at the last moment. Contractors warned that the website was not ready, but the message never reached the Oval Office. Big government IT projects often go awry, but rarely as spectacularly as this.

The Economist supported Obamacare when it passed Congress in 2010. We worried that the law was too complex (see article) and did too little to curb medical inflation, but it extended health insurance to the millions of Americans who lack it. The basic idea is sound: everyone must have insurance or pay a penalty. The cash-strapped receive big subsidies, and insurers are barred from charging more to those who are already sick. A more modest version of this reform works quite well in Massachusetts. A man with little interest in details and a disdain for business, Mr Obama tried to impose a gigantic change on the whole country all at once and far too casually.

The longer it takes to fix the website, the greater the chance that Obamacare will fail. Insurers have set their premiums on the assumption that lots of young, healthy people would be compelled to buy their policies. But if it takes dozens of attempts to sign up, the people who do so will be disproportionately the sick and desperate. Insurers could be stuck with a far more expensive pool of customers than they were expecting, and could have no choice but to raise prices next year. That would make Obamacare even less attractive to the young “invincibles” it needs to stay afloat.

To make matters worse, this sorry saga has caused American voters to doubt Mr Obama’s honesty. Time after time, when selling his reform, he told voters that if they liked their health insurance, they could “keep that insurance. Period. End of story.” Policy wonks knew this was untrue. Mr Obama’s number-crunchers quietly predicted that up to two-thirds of people with individual policies would be forced to change them, since the law would make many bare-bones plans illegal. But ordinary Americans took their president at his word; many were furious to learn last month that their old policies would be cancelled.

The poisonous politics of health care point to another common complaint about Mr Obama: that he gives great speeches but fails to build relationships. Abroad, he has cool relations with foreign heads of government. The leaders of allies such as Israel and Saudi Arabia scorn him. Europeans grumble that they are ignored when they want to be heard and spied on when they want to be left alone. Latin Americans feel neglected. Mr Obama’s “pivot” to Asia has made China feel threatened, without reassuring other Asians that America will be there in a crisis. Many doubt Mr Obama’s word—remember his “red line” over the use of chemical weapons in Syria?—and lament his inability to get things done.

At home, he seldom schmoozes with his political opponents—or even with his own side. Past presidents put in far more effort to charm and bully lawmakers, business moguls and anyone who could help them. Lyndon Johnson was famous for blackmailing congressmen to do the right thing, which is a hard art to practise if you barely know them. Mr Obama remains aloof—he has no regular breakfast or lunch even with the main Democrats in Congress. You cannot slap backs and twist arms if you are not in the same room.

Forget the Nobel halo—and roll up your sleeves
There is a personal tragedy in this: a talented man who too often does not follow through. As Bill Clinton is reputed to have said, Mr Obama got all the hard stuff right, “but didn’t do the easy stuff at all”. Assuming that he still has the stomach for the fight, what can Mr Obama do to win back that lost credibility?

At home, the priority is simply to get his health exchange fixed. His announcement last week that people who have lost their old insurance will be allowed to get it back is a sham: he has given insurers neither the time nor the incentive to recreate the policies he previously ordered them to ditch. He should stop making empty promises, get rid of the aides who filter out bad news and roll up his sleeves.

Can he get any more done? Immigration reform is still just possible. He now says he is open to tackling it piecemeal, rather than in a comprehensive bill, which raises the chance that it will happen. An even bigger prize would be a long-term fix for America’s finances, with Republicans accepting some tax rises and Democrats tolerating cuts to entitlements. He has little to lose: at present he will go down in history, alongside George W. Bush, as a skipper who ignored the looming fiscal iceberg.

Fixing those problems would require Mr Obama to discover both Clintonian skills of triangulation and some Republicans who don’t hate him. As with other second-term presidents, foreign policy may offer more opportunity. The Obama brand is less tarnished abroad. And American power is sold short by a lot of people—including, sometimes, Mr Obama. With its matchless armed forces, a web of alliances and omnipresent soft power, the United States is still the world’s indispensable nation—as it has shown in the rescue efforts in the Philippines (see Banyan). When Mr Obama ordered a strike against Osama bin Laden, he proved that he can be decisive; when he patiently built the case with China and Russia for imposing sanctions on Iran, he was persuasive.

So Mr Obama can get things done when he puts the effort in. Our special report lays out the opportunities that a more committed and confident president could seize. In many regions, such as Latin America, just a little bit of attention could yield impressive results. Free-trade deals could tie in allies across the Atlantic and the Pacific. Having over-reached in Asia and with a string of domestic problems, China needs Mr Obama to keep the world stable. If Mr Obama can build a better relationship with China, he will advance both countries’ interests. An immediate test is Iran: an interim agreement to halt its nuclear programme would be a first step towards re-engaging America in the Middle East. But only if Mr Obama works at it and sells a deal to Israel and his Arab allies.

Mr Obama may not be able to walk on water. That is now painfully clear, perhaps even to him. But America’s first black president still has it in his power to leave the Oval Office famous for what he did, not just what he was.

Main Idea:Mr Obama's error and current problems.Advices given to Obama
The power of the president of the USA is that when he speaks, the world listens. But the people around the world do not trust Obama now. Many people attribute all the fault to him.But he shouldn't be blamed for every errors.
The main problem of Obama now is the Obama Care. The fail of the Obamacare Website weanken his honesty.Although this health care plan is sound, but it is too complex and was taken too quick.Obama should take a longer time to fix this plan, instead of getting it down at once. And the problem of the website is serious. The longer time to fix it,the greater chance the Obama care will fail.
Obama's another problem is that he gives great speech, but he fail to build relationships. He has cool relationship with both foreign leader and political opponents and partners at home.
Advices to Obama
1 Get Obama Care fixed immigration refrom fixed.
2 He need really put the effort in dealing with these problems.
Obama need to discover both Clintonian skills of triangulation and some Republicans who don’t hate him to solve recent problems

Many predictions that may be probably not in 2014:
A coming tech-lash: Many of the most popular tech offerings, remain free to the public or cheapif you upgrade. And new services come along all the time to keep the supply-demand equation balanced in favor of consumers.
The Twitter IPO will produce many more social-media offerings: however, twitter may be a solid business, but not a necessarily trendsetter.

Predictions about 2014. The first one is about the tech-lash. Many Tech providers like Twitter or Facebook will have good development, while oil companies or banks will be hated by the costumers.  The second prediction is about the IPO. Time 5
The third prediction is that the policy of the  US cental bank  will make many people dissatisfied. They think Fed has lost credibility by keeping money too loose for too long. The fourth prediction is about China economy. "becoming more comfortable with discomfort"
3 steps
1. Slow down.
2. Recognize our emotional cues.
3. Practice.
2'14
1.New services come along all the time to keep the supply-demand equation balanced in favor of consumers. Thus “tech-lash” will not happen.
2.The Twitter IPO will not produce many more social-media offerings.
1'54
3.“Many will wonder if central banks know what they are doing.” is not wrong, it's just dated.
4.There’s no doubt the size of China’s economy will eventually eclipse that of the United States, if only by virtue of its massive population. But whether that will automatically make China a global leader is highly debatable.
3'16
Surveys show a majority of Americans still believe in the conspiracy theories, distrusting evidence pointing to Oswald as the sole killer.
10'52
Recent events have seriously shaken people’s belief in Mr Obama.

Not all the barbs aimed at Mr Obama are fair.
-The debacle of Obamacare has gravely weakened the president.
-The poisonous politics of health care point to another common complaint about Mr Obama: that he gives great speeches but fails to build relationships.

So Mr Obama can get things done when he puts the effort in.
-At home, the priority is simply to get his health exchange fixed.
-Immigration reform is still just possible.
-Fixing those problems would require Mr Obama to discover both Clintonian skills of triangulation and some Republicans who don’t hate him.

Conclusion:America’s first black president still has it in his power to leave the Oval Office famous for what he did, not just what he was.

Speaker  a woman asked her husband who have just get off a plane for 12 hour to strip down his clothes and bathe himself outside the house because she worry that he may carry the contagious disease that can infect to her and other people.
2  222  1’18  too often we learn to speak yes to maintain our success and keep open to the opportunities. However, always saying yes without thinking about twice or your interest may result in a lack of clarity and failure. So it is curial to learn how to say no firmly and graceful.
3  287  1’43  when we say no we will suffer some kind of subtle feelings that can be frustrating and bad. So it is important to know this feeling’s exist and how to deal with it. First to slow it down. Second, recognize our emotional cues. Then practice.
4  323  1’41  4 predictions that will not happen in 2014.  the tech lash will probably not happen. Even though there are some tech titans who are crass and mean to the normal individuals, there are still some tech companies like twitter and facebook who will go on to keep free or cheap for the service it provided. Twitter will not offer more social-media offerings. And what twitter’s ipo has gone through has told us that the ipo market is smooth and sensitive.
5  320  1’58  the big centre bank do not know what they are doing. This predication is due to the misconduct and mismanagement of Fed during these years. However, it is already outdated.  Lots of people say that china will become the top dog in the world. Because of its vast population and production in the world, it do eclipse the us. However, in china there are still a great number of people living in the rural places under subsistence levels and recent reports say that the officials in china are tend to be corruption. All these problems hinder china to become the world super power.
6  490  2’48  the 50 anniversary of JFK death. It has always been a mystery for the past 50 years about the plot of kennedy’s death. And the city of dallas also changed because the assassination. President kennedy is one of the most respectful and influential presidents in the American history. Since his death, the dallas has been covered by a sense of sorrow and mystery. People often see the day of kenndy’s death as the darkest day in a year. They hold the view that the assassination of kenndy is a conspiracy rather than simply killed by Oswald himself. The investigation about the assassination will go on.
7  1395  9’33  the real power of the American president is the bully pulpit the power of influence of the country even the whole world. What mr obama do and say is disappointing. His rate of approval is down and people begin to disbelieve him. All that is because his obamacare did not accord to the original case and the shutdown of government in October reveals his incorporation with both republican and democrat. President should combined the two parties and make up the crash. But mr obama seem never be negotiable and easy-going. What is worse, he is not good at dealing with the relations between other countries such as Europeans, east Asian, latin American .  all the easy things he did are worse and disappointing for us.
But it is not all bad. Obama , the first black president in us, should learn from the previous presidents and careful deal with the isral problems. After all, what he could do and recover is still there for him.

[Time6_2:54]Dallas holds its first official ceremony to see the 50th anniversary of JKF’s assassination. Still now on, JKF’s death has conspiracy theories. Recently, Dallas removed a large X embedded into the pavement by an unknown somebody that marked the spot where Kennedy was shot in the head.

[Obstacle_11:58]The problem about Mr. Obama’s dominant and foreign policies, then gives some advices. The threshold problem is Obama care, which is hard to apply and benefit to young, healthy people. Because the insurance is more expensive than pool of customers were expecting. Another problem is that Obama gives great speeches but fails to build relationships with other countries and people. Then, the report lays out the opportunities that a more committed and confident president could seize. If Mr. Obama can build a better relationship with China, he would advanced both countries’ interests.

There are four prediction which will be false.
-A coming “tech-lash”. Most of the technology people used are free or cheap to upgrade, such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin etc.

Dallas held the 50th anniversary ceremony in the Plaza where the President Kennedy was been assassinated.
Due to the assassination, Dallas has been noted as “city of hate”.
And, till now, people still suspect the conspiracy and distrust the two killers who are nobodies.

Paraphrase7: 10:16
President Obama has lost his credibility at home for his healthcare reform and weaken the America allies with other countries.
Due to the disagree with Obamacare, the government shut down. However, when the reform passed, the online health insurance exchange system does not success as Mr. Obama promised before. The longer the system is needed to be fixed, the greater change the Obamacare will fail.
Although Obama settled down several hard stuff, he does not do easy thing right at home.
And, Mr. Obama does not build good relationships with many counties. It is better for his to find the common interests with China and reengage with the Middle East.

1'18 [171WPM] We usually tend to say "yes" to the opportunities so that

we may have a bigger chance to succeed. But when we face more

opportunities after we succeed, we would disappoint others by saying

yes to all the offers. So we should learn to say no to make our goal

more clear and maintain relationship with others.

1'58 [146WPM] We usually respond reflexibly when we feel anxious about

the opportunities. But we may pay for the reflex later. So we should

take measures to eliminate the uncertainty.
1. slow down to feel the anxiety we have when we want to reject.

2'19 [139WPM] Lists some of the predictions we have that turn to be

wrong.
1.The technical lash, since those CEO are the 帮凶 of wall street, the

price must be going up. However, it did not happened.
2. The Twitter's IPO can provide more offers for IT companies. NO.

2'34 [125WPM] The central bank did nothing to improve. China is

developing quickly, but there is still many problems remained to be

tackled by the Chineses politicians.

3'16 [150WPM] Dallas holds its first memorial for JFK after he was

assassinated 50 years ago. JFK's assasination changed Dallas a lot.
