标题: 急！全网唯一的题！！rather than 还是instead of
Professor Wendham danied his teaching assistant's request to allow students to turn in their papers in handwritten form instead of to type them up using a computer.

A.to allow students to turn in their papers in handwritten form instead of to type them up using
E.to allow students to turn in their papers in handwritten form rather than type them up using

答案选E

就两个选项有点搞不清。答案的解释居然是A中的them指代不清，可以指papers or students。那E里不是也有相同的问题么？？

然后这个地方主要是平行吧。但是rather than 后面应该是不能加to的。所以我认为A里面的平行更好。还是说在instead of后面的to 应该要省略呢。

请教各位NN。非常感谢！！！

12号要考试了还不知道会不会换库呢。。。急啊。

所以不管是instead of 还是 rather than 后面都是不可以加to的吗？

所以要是to do形式的平行的话。都应该省略to咯？

in stead of后面应该跟名词，或者动名词吧；如果要用动词强调动作，那么就用instead 或者rather than.
划线句的前半句用的是allow to do显然强调的是动作，所以看选项只有rather than比较合适。（不知道其它选项是啥呢）
期待NN的正解。

我认为rather than是连词，可以并列to do,E选项中rather than后的to省略了。

OG verbal 分册上sc95题有关于instead of 用法的解释：
the construction x instead of y, when x and y are infinitives, is clumsy
the idiomatic construction x rather y is better here

从语法的角度看，instead of 是介词，只能用于名词成分（名词、动名词等）的平行，而rather than 是连词，既可以用于名词又可以用于动词。

我22号考，不知道啥时候换库啊。。楼主加油，人品爆发哦！

A: them, pronoun problem
B: typed up a computer, doesn't make sense
C: turn...........typing......doesn't parellel
D: the same as C
E: is perfect

So we go with E

there's also a very slight difference in meaning. i'll bet you 99.99% that gmac will never test this, but ...
... "X instead of Y" means that "Y" was some sort of default / assumed / preferred outcome, but that X has been substituted for it.
... "X rather than Y" indicates no such preference; it just means that there were options X and Y, and, this time, X won.

e.g.
He paid with a check rather than cash.
--> He had two options, and chose the check.

He paid with a check instead of cash.
--> He was supposed to pay in cash, but he paid with a check.

again, the likelihood that this will ever actually be tested is essentially zero, but, there it is.

1. to turn in their papers in handwritten form rather than type them up，ratherthan连接的是一个平行的结构，所以them对应their papers,不会有pronoun ambiguity.
且RON说过，pronoun ambiguity不能作为排除因素
2. The "of" in "instead of" is a preposition, and its object must be a noun. Thus, "instead of" can only be used to compare single nouns, and the GMAT Sentence Correction seems to avoid even this use. The GMAT also seems to avoid the "instead of" [gerund] structure. The "than" in "rather than" is a subordinate clause, so the structure "rather than" is considerably more flexible in what can follow it.
