114. Starfish, with anywhere from five to eight arms, have a strong regenerative ability, and if one arm is lost it. quickly reolaces it. sometimes by the animal overcomoensating and growing an extra one or two.
(A) one arm is lost it quickly replaces it, sometimes by the animal overcompensating and

(B) one arm is lost it is quickly replaced, with the animal sometimes overcompensating and

(C) they lose one arm they quickly replace it, sometimes by the animal overcompensating,

(D) they lose one arm they are quickly replaced, with the animal sometimes overcompensating,

(E) they lose one arm it is quickly replaced, sometimes with the animal overcompensating,

正确答案：B
首先通过代词和先行词需要单复数一致排除了A、D选项
对于E选项答案给出的解释是 If X,(then) Y这种结构中，X和Y要么同时是被动句，要么同时是主动。
对于C选项答案给出的解释是强加了starfish是通过overcompensating来replacing miss arm这种关系，并且overcompensating和growing的关系也不清楚。
这时就到了我的疑问了，那overcompensating和growing到底应该是什么关系呢？如果由正确答案B来看，二者是平行并列的，也就是说是两个处于同等地位的动作。但是我认为，从逻辑含义来说，应该是先有过度的补偿（overcompensating）才会导致海星多长了介个触角（growing an extra one or two)，它们应该存在一个先后的逻辑关系。growing an extra on or two 是overcompensating的结果，因此growing不应该用and连接，而是在后面加逗号，在用-ing形式表示overcompensating导致的这样一个结果。

我觉的你把问题编辑一下效果会好一些，你这应该是完全复制的贴过来，这样看起来非常的吃力。

LZ 我在这个题也是纠结了很久。
如果按楼主这里的把逗号，v+ing 放进去。

animal sometimes overcompensating, growing an extra one or two。
首先有两个状语在句尾做修饰，不太清楚是不是会awkward 但有点怪怪的。
并且，这里前面的animal overcompensating 什么不清，animal 过度补充什么，补充自己？？
再，growing 在这里要么做状语修饰整个句子，要么做定语修饰逗号前的名词，所以不可能做overcompensating 的状语的。
最后，and 的用法有很多种，可以表并列，有时候也会有表因果
for example：
柯林斯英汉双解大词典： CONJ You use and to link two clauses when the second clause is a result of the first clause. 结果

例：All through yesterday crowds have been arriving and by midnight thousands of people packed the square.
昨天一整天人们一直不断地到达，结果到午夜的时候成千上万的人挤满了这个广场。
但是这里是表因果还是并列我不太清楚。

但是我还有一个问题啊，它为什么不能修饰前面的overcompensating这个，而是只能修饰整个句子或者逗号前的名词呢？

谢谢亲，我不是大神，CD上面很多大牛
句尾逗号V+ing 是sc这里面重量级语法，它的用法也很具有争议性，但是总的来说混淆的就是它是否是做状语修饰句子，还是做定语修饰逗号前的名词，dearivy 可以看prep上的笔记，大概前几题就有关于V+ing 用法的讲解。如果没有prep，或觉得麻烦你可以直接在搜索栏搜索V+ing 估计会有很多相关的解释

我还想请教一下，如何分辨用V-ing修饰整个句子和dangling modifier呢？

通常：V+ing 可以放于句首，句尾，句中（如主语谓语之间）
1.放在句首的话，首先这里就不要去太计较它做定语还是状语，，因为它做定语的话就修饰主语，做状语的话修饰主句的谓语，总之这个都是主语发出来的。你就当它修饰主语比较清晰。但是它在句首容易 dangling modifier，为什么呢，因为它修饰主语或逻辑主语是主句的主语的话，那么他们必须在逻辑上一致，比如你不会说在句首一些表人的动作，而主语是物这就dangling modifier了。
For example： planning a picnic， his work haven't finished.  这个就有dangling modifier ，这里的逻辑主语是物 his work ，它不能作为planning的逻辑主语。

2 逗号，V+ing 放在句尾时，通常情况下它做状语修饰前面的句子或动作。但是它没失去做定语的功能，即修饰逗号前的最接近或跳跃修饰的名词。
   这时你就要根据逻辑意思去判断了，这里的V+ing 做的是结果，原因，伴随状语，是否这个句子迫切需要这种状语来修饰，区别它是状语还是定语的方法就是：改变它在文中的位置不会改变意思，因为修饰全句或动作状语放在哪意思都不会改变。
   大多数情况下，用逗号加V+ing 不会做定语修饰，因为会产生做状语或做定语的混淆的歧义，（既然用which 或that从句更加清晰明了的是修饰名词，干嘛要用V+ing来有些歧义的修饰？肯定清晰地定语名词修饰更好）但是这个法则不是绝对的，也不排除有些特殊情况，当你发现 V+ING在后面做的是定语修饰有些歧义，但与其它选项比起来，其他都有很致命的错误，那么选这个虽然有些歧义但不是完全错误的，会更好。
我手头没资料，我能想到的就这些，不知道能不能解答到你的疑惑。

上面这个例子好像应该用 havent been finished 。sorry 自己想的例子随意编的，突然想到举错了
