The lecturer argued against the passage, stating that he zebra mussel can actually be controled and this creature has no obvious threat to the overall fish population.
Firstly, the lecturer said that it was possible to stop the ships from carry the zebra mussel, which, according to the passage, was important way for mussel to spread to the coast of North America. The reason why this kind of jelly fish can be attach itself to the ship's bottom is because the ship contained fresh water, the "ballast wather". If the ship are required to empty out the fresh water and put in the ocean water, there will be less zebra mussel for the salty water will kill them.
Secondly, the professor refuted the point made in the passage that there are often no predator for zebra mussel in their new habitat, pointing out that this was just at the beginning and there are predators like a kind of birds in Europe. The birds soon find out there's new food sources and they switch from eating the food they used to eat to eating large amount of the zebra mussels.
Thirdly, unlike what is shown in the passage, the zebra mussle doesn't cause the decline of the overall fish population. Indeed, it does have some negative impacts on the fish who eats plankton. However, since it helps to generate nutrients which could be eaten by the fish living at the bottom of the lakes, they positively influencted the population of the bottom-feeding fish.
