2 AODA: A job with more vacation time but a lowsalary is better than a job with a high salary but less vacation time.
Perhaps no issue is as significant to a white collar as whetherchoose a position with more time and less money or one with less time but moremoney. Despite various responses people may have on this topic, I, given thechance, prefer to endorse that time is more pivotal to money when consideringthe work-life balance.
At first glance, a decent job with high salary provides you a strongpurchasing power for the products or services you desire. Without high financialconditions, a girl can only window shopping around luxury goods store but noteven bear a confidence to get into the door! After I have worked so hard on an investmentbanking project for a high tech company, I get my return: thousands dollarbonus! I was so excited that I hurried to Prada at the ground floor of myoffice building and immediately bought a purse that I have desired for severalmonths. At that time, I thought every minute I spend on that project deserved.
However, can I go to Hawaii for my holidays when I finished myproject? I can imagine the angry expression on my boss . High salary withlittle time just gives me a sudden excitement instead of a long-term happiness. My way to relax after a project is to enjoy the California sunshine, eatAustralia lobster, and jogging around a French garden. A job with severecommitment renders your vacation into fantasy. On the other hand, although aposition with low salary maybe only allow me to enjoy a long trip abroad once ayear after saving money for half year, I will highly value the vacation and rejuvenateafter the trip. Even if I were paid by high salary, it had nothing to do with myholiday: I don’t have enough time.
Instead of having less time to enjoy a holiday, a high-paidprofession is always related to stress. A recent social survey on a group ofrandom employees in Shanghai shows that statistically people with higherpayment suffer from more anxiety and fear than those with less salary. Itfurther proves that professions with high salary have higher possibility to getthe diseases such as high blood pressure, heart attack and even brain cancer. Irecently heard the death of a former colleague of mine who work in MorganStanley. He was highly devoted to investment banking project and I stillremember the day we worked till midnight. At that time, he often told me thathis heart sometimes beats randomly, which make him hard to fell asleep. Iinsisted him to go to hospital but he rejected because the job didn’t allow himat daytime. Consequently, he fell down on his desk at the last minute in hislife. After hearing his story, I become more determined to switch my careerfrom investment banking to commercial banking, which provides more opportunity tomaintain good health.
After ruminating both factors including providing more leisure time aswell as staying healthy, I am firmly convinced that only a position with moretime and possibly less money can make me better enjoy my life.
