Combining enormous physical strength with higher intelligence, the Neanderthals appear as equipped for facing any obstacle the environment could put in their path, but their relatively sudden disappearance during the Paleolithic era indicates that an inability to adapt to some environmental change led to their extinction.
(A) appear as equipped for facing any obstacle the environment could put in their path,
(B) appear to have beenequipped to face any obstacle the environment could put in their path,
(C) appear as equipped to face any obstacle the environment could put in their paths,
(D) appeared as equipped to face any obstacle the environment could put in their paths,
(E) appeared to have been equipped for facing any obstacle the environment could put in their path,
B选项appear to have been equipped为什么要用现在完成时？（byRON）
this isn't a present perfect construction, because it's actually an infinitive.
i.e., it's not "they have been equipped"; it's "they appear TO HAVE been equipped".
（个人理解：前一句是现在完成时；后一句是过去时，因为appear习惯用法是后面+to do此处been equipped是被动语态的过去式，所以表达式就变成了they appear TO HAVE been equipped.）
in any case, you should probably just memorize this construction as a one-off idiomatic structure. if you say "they seemed/appeared to...", then, no matter how remote the event is (in time), you use this construction.
for instance:
it seems that the students cheated on the exam
(normal past tense in this construction)
but...
the students seem to have cheated on the exam
(not here)
i don't really have a good explanation for this, other than "i'm a writer with a firm command of formal english, and i know that it is so" and "you should just think of it as an idiom". sorry i can't do better than that.
in any case, though, you DO have to use an infinitive after "appear" or "seem" in this sort of construction. and if you think about it, this is as past-tense as an infinitive can get. so that's why you have to use it.
简而言之，我的解读是：
appear to have been equipped 这里不是现在完成时have been，是appear to have习惯用法+been equipped被动语态的过去时。
这也正好符合OG解释The verb tense clearly indicates that the current evidence is about Neanderthals in the past.
appear现在时，been equipped是过去发生的

问题的关键是如何在做题的时候能够调用出对于题目的“理解”，这点比较重要。按照答案分析（我没有说不好或者一定没用），有时候会让自己不知道自己究竟会怎么想，反而强迫自己按照答案去理解，我觉得这样意义不大，考试时候也比较危险。

的确，这是我目前遇到的很大的问题。就像中学学习数学时一样，看答案总觉得自己理解了，但是真正自己做的时候还是什么都不懂。目前语法碰到了问题，所谓的感觉越来越差，10月底就是最后一战了，不知道能否给点建议？ 感谢.

哈，你好。我也是10月28考试，我觉得语法还是有一定的方法的，但是绝对不是传统的“语法点”的方法，一些特别确定的语法点，比如主谓一致，或者逻辑主语可以用来排除一些选项，但是考试时候估计只能排除一两个选项，剩下的一定是用语义推理。我现在决定把逻辑和阅读一起进行，语法需要严格形成思维模式。我们一起加油！我的qq：693710018，可以一起交流。

复习越到后面越有同样的感觉,逻辑为王。
OG和PERP语法点更细,往往靠几个点就可以排除大部分选项,而实战的时候感觉选项之间的差异小太多,而且很少有那么明显的语法点。 
加你了,不过最近几乎都待图书馆,申请快截止再不考出来实在是来不及了。

千万别深入研究语法，这对考试帮助很小，考试考的是语意和是否通顺。
这个题首先向appear as是要加名词的，就像那道题：sunspots...appear as dark spots....所以很显然appear to 更通顺一些。
然后to和for作比较，to更好一些。
原文意思：结合了更强体能和更高智商，尼安德特人看起来已经具备了克服任何存在于他们前进道路上的障碍（的能力），但是他们在旧石器时代的突然消失表明他们缺少适应环境变化的能力导致他们的灭亡。
为什么用have been？因为语意告诉我们，虽然已经有了。。但是还是灭亡了，你能读出“已经”来。为什么appear?appear是现在的人看尼安德特人，现在的人不可能跑到过去看他们所以不能用ed。为什么后面是indicate?因为他们的灭亡是在现在表明的，而不是在过去。
做题要看关键，这个题关键是 appear as/to, as+名词，to+动词。如果你一上来就分析时态，那么肯定就要花很多时间。大部分情况下，时态不是拿到一个题第一个应该考虑的因素。

their path也是可以的啊，their并不是复数的标志啊，他们的path可以是他们共同的一个path，也有可能是他们不同的多个path，所以their path不能split，OG上有很清楚的解答，while individual Neanderthals may well have followed different paths, this sentence is about the single evolutionary path taken by Neanderthals as a species.

其实我觉得会不会原本要用had been equipped? 因为后面是disappeared，equipped肯定发生在disapeared之前啊~但是，结合appear to do 来用时，had跟在to后面还原成have，所以就变成了appear to have been equipped?

感谢lz搬运！但是关于楼主说的“appear to have习惯用法“，我有些不同的看法。
RON说的“if you think about it, this is as past-tense as an infinitive can get.” 我觉得意思是：
appear本身的习惯用法是appear to do
例如 She appears to be in a relationship with Tom Holland. 她似乎在和荷兰弟谈恋爱。
然而，appear to do表示的是一般现在时，如果我们想表达“她似乎和荷兰弟谈过恋爱”，要怎么说呢？
注意：to是不定式，后面只能加动词原形！
我们不能说She appears to been in a relationship with Tom Holland，因为to是不定式，后面不能加过去式been。
因此，为了表达‘过去’这层含义，且不违反语法规则，只能把been改成have been了。
这里的have been不是现在完成时，只是没办法了的无奈之举，即RON男神说的 this is as past-tense as an infinitive can get，这是一个不定式能够做到的最恰当的表达【过去】含义的方法啦！
综上，楼主说的“appear to have习惯用法” 实际上应该是 “当appear后面的事件发生在过去时，用appear to have done表示【过去】含义”。

补充曼哈顿论坛上RON的另一句话，私以为十分醍醐灌顶，比我上面一大堆的解释精炼很多：
"to have ___ed" is the only past-tense version of "to ___".

这道题做了几次就错了几次，看过OG解析、翻过论坛资料、看过Ron的解释，过段时间仍旧错。
我总结了一下主要是这3点，还请各位大神指正：
1. 在句子没有时间标志词的情况下，用一般现在时。这句句子为了与下文的indicates保持时态一致，所以要用一般现在时。
2. appear as 以...出现; appear to do 似乎; 意思不同
appear as + 名词
ex. He appeared as an army man in the negotiation room.
3. to have been 表示过去
