Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
It is better to have broad knowledge of many academic subjects than to specialize in one specific subject.
Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

People always admire the ones who are like walking encyclopedias. This leads to the fact that many people have a fever in learning as much as they can. But as we all know, everyone has his or her limited time and energy for study, a pursuit of quantity will no doubt cut down the quality of learning. As a consequence, a debate is put on board: which one is better for an individual, having broad knowledge or specializing in one subject? From my perspective, the one having broad knowledge of lots of academic subjects will win over aspecializing person for most of the situations.

Imagine this: two men are applying for a position, say, a programmer, in a big IT company. One of the two knows a lot about just programming. As for economics and management, he has no idea. On the contrast, the other guy has a broad knowledge not only in computer programming, but also in areas like politics, art and management. Who do you think the company will hire? I think a big company has a larger tendency to pick the one with more comprehensive knowledge. It will probably hire him because he knows more, which makes him have a good understanding of the market and as a result, the programs he codes are more likely to be accepted by the general mass. Furthermore, because of his knowledge in management, he has a greater chance to get promoted, especially a great chance to get into the board of the company. This time, a broader knowledge wins him the good chance to work.

In addition, if a person knows a lot besides his expertise, he or she is more likely to be able to talk and get along with colleagues and other people around, in an interpersonal sense. What will you, a mathematician with great standing of only math, feel if you are at a party and people around you are excited in discussing something about poems and poets? Will you be awkward and wanting to sneak away immediately? I bet most of us will feel like this. Consequently, you will not be well fit in this circle and get along well with these people. However, if you know things about all people's talk and you can even express your own deep and profound opinion, things will completely change.

Though specializing in one specific subject is quitenecessary and significant, as many people will say, I admit it but still insist on my own point of view. There is no denying that many people, especially scientists, only have a good command of their own knowledge. Nevertheless, these people are always recognized as freaks or geeks despite their far-reaching and sophisticated academic fruit in their own field. As most of us who are just normal, broad knowledge is a better choice rather than specializing.

From what has been discussed above, we can safely draw the conclusion that, in general, having broad knowledge could help a person get started in no matter daily communication or taking off a career. And there are also more convincing reasons accounting for it; while in the other side, with just a specified and narrow scope of knowledge, something embarrassing could happen.
