Governments should focus more on solving the immediate problems of today rather than trying to solve the anticipated problems of the future.
政府应该更多关注当今现实问题的解决,而不是试图去解决将来可能会发生的问题

I agree with the proposal in so far as when governments facing some urgent social situations, they are supposed to solve the exigent problems at once. However, when dealing with other things, particularly environmental protection and population planning, governments have little justification to overlook the problems expected in the future.
Admittedly, under some urgent social situations, governments' promptly solution of immediate problems will contribute to the stability of the entire country. Nowadays, unemployment problem is being increasingly pervasive around us. According to a recent survey conducted by Chinese government in 2013, nearly 75 percent of low-income family are linked to unemployment. Also, the criminal motives of over a half of thieves and robbers are connected with unemployment. Thus, governments should rapidly supply more jobs to the jobless individuals so as to meet their money demand. Otherwise, those job-losers may spare no effort to find other ways, probably crime, to buttress their family which undoubtedly diminish the security of society.
By contrast, when confronting with other things like environmental protection, government can get few benefits from paying more attention on solving the current problem, not the ones of future. On account of lacking cultivated land, Chinese government reclaim land from Dongting Lake, China's second-largest freshwater lake, in 1958 which made the area of it decline sharply from 8,000 square kilometers to 3,000 square kilometers. Governments hardly realized that the lake can not only sustain the species diversity but store water to prevent flood. Thus, Chinese government had no choice but to input a huge number of man power and material resources to control the flood after 1998.
Finally, still handling some specific problem such as population planning, governments ought to think about tomorrow, otherwise they may be frustrate with terrible consequences caused by their improvidence. During the period of Chairman Mao's leadership in China, the government encouraged families to have as many children as possible because of Mao's belief that population growth empowered the country. As a result, The population grew from around 540 million in 1949 to 940 million in 1976. Although one-child policy was announced by the government to control the population later, it still induce severe consequences nowadays like aging and gender imbalance. Due to the government's unthoughtful decision before, we all paid a heavy price.
In sum, I concede that when governments facing some urgent social situations, problems must be tackled without delay. However,in view of environment and population, it is not a good idea for government to find a quick solution before thoroughly considerate the consequence may occur in the future.作者: 普渡哥 时间: 2013-8-16 11:32
