标题: OG13 SC85 求解疑
85. According to a recent poll, owning and living in a
freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a
majority of young adults, like that of earlier generations.

(A) like that of earlier generations
(B) as that for earlier generations
(C) just as earlier generations did
(D) as have earlier generations
(E) as it was of earlier generations

我选了A，我认为that是指代goal的，为什么就不能作为比较的对象呢？按照OG上的意思来看，应该是owning and living in a freestanding house是比较对象，想请问如果是svo. 加比较是不是只能subject参与比较呢？求解！

可是答案是E呢
OG表示E中的it与前句中的owning and living in a freestanding house平行
A为啥就不行呢

A选项，是说 owning and living in a
freestanding house 和 that of earlier generations 比较。
并且like这个词表示属性上面的一致，所以比较一下，选项A不如E表达清楚一些。

答案是E没错，首先，as后面是跟句子没错吧it指代的是前面的主语（owning and living in a
freestanding house on its own land），was是因为句意表达的是从前的earlier所以用过去式对应前面的is；其中was和of之间是有省略的（a goal）。
重新整理一下，句子是这样的，LZ你理解一下，owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, as it（owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land） was （a goal）of earlier generations.

A是错的，因为如果用like的话，那么比较对象必须不能一样。但是后面用that of，这个that就是指代goal, 那么这两个goal是一样的，所以不能用like。
E是省略了，补完应该是it was (a goal) of

1. 从位置上看 "comma+like that of ..."是一个“，介词短语”的修饰成分。这种修饰成分，一般修饰主句主语。类似的结构“,Ving”, ",with"结构等等~所以owning and living in a freestanding house like that of earlier generation读上去不对吧，owning和living和that是不能比较的~
2. “like”是一个明显的"comparison signal". "Comparisons are a form of parallelism and compare 2 or more parts of the sentence."--摘自Manhattan SC note。出现了比较的问题，我们第一反应一定是"structurally and logically parallel"。所以我个人倒觉得，A还是比较好排除的~
3. 还有一点，就是大家这里说的，like that指的是相似的东西。You are grown up in an environment like that of mine.我们两成长的环境相似，但不全相同。而As it was 就是两个完全相同的东西了。I was educated as it was done in your culture. 我们在相似环境下接受的教育是完全一样的。OG这道题中也是两代人的同一个梦想，强调一下，同一个。
4. 说道like和as的区别，我觉得主要是like是介词，而as是连词（as也有作介词的时候，但用的少）。所以我们一般看到like之后所接大多为名词，名词短语等简单成分。而as之后可以接任何复杂成分。其他的差别还有很多啦，比如like的位置放得不好更容易引起理解的歧义等等。具体可看下Manhattan的comparison章节，其中有关于as与like在GMAT语法使用中的比较。

恩，目前想到的就这么多吧，有问题再探讨。

第一，这里的that指代不清啊，可以指代a goal 也可以是a majority 等等。Ron这么说的In your most recent sentence, however, 'that of earlier generations' is a problem. Specifically, 'that of' doesn't have a clear referent, because there's no strong parallel structure to determine it anymore. It could conceivably stand for 'goal', 'majority', or perhaps even 'freestanding house' or 'land'. And if you go by the best possible parallelism, 'that of' seems to refer to a majority, because that's the word placed right before '...OF young adults' (which seems to work in parallel with '...OF earlier generations').

第二，like的用法，一般是用来比较名词的，但是在这个题中我们要比较的是 VERBS/WAYS ，所以要用as。如果句子变成表达The goal of the current generation, LIKE THAT OF previous generations, is... 用like就可以了~

这题主句是表语前置倒装，不然这么多人没有怀疑过doing a and doing b后面的谓语是is？？？主语是a goal of majority of

实际上我可以说就像父辈的梦想，年青一代的梦想是blablabla

实质是两代人dream都是一样的拥有独栋住房。那就用it，如果是程度上的区别，年轻人对此的追求弱于父辈，就用that

另一种解释是如果是like A, B do其实有歧义是说A像B还是A像B一样do sth呢，用as作为比较更好

这位前辈，根据og的解释：

我是刷着刷着刷回到自己的帖子来了囧现在对这题也有了自己新的认识
没错比较对象的确是两代人的同一个goal
根据E选项还原原句
According to a recent poll, owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults, as (owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land) was a goal of earlier generations.
括号部分太冗长所以以it指代，出于有as，所以比较对象a goal可以省略（个人见解，不知道对不对）
至于你说的表语前置倒装，我不是语法大牛牛，不太理解，我将语序正过来 a goal of ……is owning and ……，我认为这种顺序改变了句子的逻辑重心，并且在我刷og的过程中，有发现通常og对此类倒装的解释是比较awkward。

愚见，杀鸡共勉。
