标题: 【新手求意见】由两道古老的题对except/except for/excepting/excepting for的总结
刚刚在论坛翻了几张古老的帖子，看了下各位大神的解释，默默地码上自己的一些见解。

我个人觉得这道题——
118. Mauritius was a British colony for almost 200 years, excepting for the domains of administration and teaching, the English language was never really spoken on the island.
(A) excepting for (B) except in (C) but except in
(D) but excepting for(E) with the exception of

这道题似乎重点并不在考except的用法。

看OG的解释中，ABE的错误都是“The lack of a conjunction causes a comma splice”，这是比用错except要更逆天的错误。
然后才讨论C和D的问题——要注意到OG说的是Excepting for is non-idiomatic.它并没有说except for不是惯用法！！！（注意这里说的绝对不是except for是不是惯用法）然后OG还说到Excepting is not idiomatic English in this case.（我们都公认——excepting只能用在否定句当中）
所以我的结论就是：
1. 这道题涉及的是excepting（不管它后面加了什么介词）只用在否定句；
2. 这道题涉及的非惯用法包括了excepting for和with the exception of
3. 这道题不讨论except for和except。

然后，各位举的例子中——
Except for a concert performance that the composer himself staged in 1911, Scott Joplin’s ragtime opera Treemonisha was not produced until 1972, sixty-one years after its completion.
(A) Except for a concert performance that the composer himself staged
(D) Excepting a concert performance that the composer himself staged（A）
(E) With the exception of a concert performance with the staging done by the composer himself

这道题大家说不是except for也出现在正确答案里了么？然后就开始辨析except和except for之间的比较对象是否应该为同类事物的问题。
但是这道题也很明显——完全避开了except和excepting的讨论！
排除D是因为excepting用在否定句，不是因为except！
排除E是因为with the exception of是大家都公认的非惯用法。

可见这2道题目的考察点，与我们所讨论的“到底用except OR except for”根本没有关系。

【结论】
1. 看清到底是except还是excepting，如果是excepting直接判断是否为否定句，如果真的是出现了except/except for的替换，先绕开它去找其他更明显的错误；
2. with the exception of/excepting for是non-idoim

我来贴一点儿关于except 和 except for的用法。---来自Ron
i do believe that "except for" is considered correct, but it's usually wordy; in mast cases in which it's appropriate, you can just use "except" instead.
ex:
the delegates came from all U.S. states except for Florida.
--> better: the delegates came from all U.S. states except Florida.

in most cases, though, except + preposition is not actually an idiomatic construction at all. what you're seeing is the use of the word "except" - in isolation - followed by a preposition that goes with whatever words follow.

for instance:
gambling is illegal everywhere in the state, except on chippewa reservations.
--> correct. notice that "except + on" is not an idiomatic construction; rather, "on" is simply the pronoun that happens to go correctly with "chippewa reservations."

lz我有个问题哈，在朗文里面excepting用来排除对前句不适用的个体对象。例句是：O（人名）answered all the questions excepting the last one. 并没有用在否定句中。
然后，看了这道题的讨论帖，我好像没找到excepting用在否定句中这一条。
我觉得这道题是因为excepting 和for 一起用了而出现错误。

"excepting for" is unidiomatic; this combination is not allowed in proper english.

you can use "excepting" by itself in this sort of situation (i.e., when you want to point out an exception to a negative statement), but not with "for".

现在的问题是OG中的这句“Excepting is not idiomatic English in this case.”
在另外一个帖子http://forum.chasedream.com/thread-276655-1-1.html 里面，说excepting的逻辑主语不对，但是excepting是一个介词，我觉得介词短语不需要看逻辑主语的啊~嗯，这一点还得再看看。

嗯，是的，我当时把ie作为用法之一而非唯一用法来看的。
现在看来把excepting用于否定是G的惯用法。

对于e选型的with the exception of，og解释中并没有说它是非惯用法，牛津字典中也有这个词条，难道说这个词组在gmat中视为非惯用？
个人觉得还是如og说的，主要是comma splice的问题，除此之外还有rule out这个选项的原因的话可能是比较wordy，求大神们赐教～

好像with the exception of... 这种用法没有直接except好，with the intention of... 没有intend... 好。

with 有伴随的意思。这题主要是前后两句的转折， M是英国的殖民地，但是除了一些domain，岛上没人说英语。秒选C
