标题: 一道GWD的【比较】的题目,请赐教!
When drive-ins were at theheight of their popularity in the late 1950’s, some 4,000 existed in the UnitedStates, but today there are less than one-quarter that many.
A.   there are less than one-quarter that many
B.    there are fewer than one-quarter as many
C.    there are fewer than one-quarter ofthat amount
D.   the number is less than one-quarter the amount
E.    it is less than one-quarter of that amount
答案是c

上课老师说less是可数、不可数都可指代的,few指代人。所以我就选了d。但如果不考虑less/few的话,the number... one quarter the amount这个说法是对的么?什么时候用the number的比较什么时候又直接比较东西的多少比较呢?这一点一直有些费解!谢谢各位来帮助或讨论!

less是修饰不可数名词的,应该是你记错了;
常见修饰可数名词和不可数名词的如下(上下一一对应):

Countable Modifiers        :many        few        fewer        fewest        number        numerous        More numerous
Uncountable Modifiers        :much        little        less          least       amount           great                greater

Both countable and uncountable: more, most, enough, and all

high/low与more/ less的区别:

The words more and less are rather flexible. They can be used as Nouns (or Pronouns), adjectives, or Adverbs.
•        I own MORE THAN I should. (more = noun or pronoun)
•        I own MORE SHIRTS THAN I should. (more = adjective)
•        I sleep MORE THAN I should. (more = adverb)
High and low, as well as higher and lower, should only be used as Adjectives.
•        My bills are LOWER than they were last year.
•        Wrong: I spend LOWER than I did last year.
•        I spend LESS than I did last year.

什么时候用the number的比较什么时候又直接比较东西的多少?我没印象有考点考这个区别,应该都行;
但是D the amount前面明显少了of 因为1/4是某个数量1/4
