(B) except in

OG给出的解释是except for不是正确的idiom；我觉得不能这么解释。except for的用法还是有的，比如
1.Remove everything from the screen except for your file.

2.All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to them, except for the cars that had columns fall directly across them.

但真正的错误应当是except for用于同类事物间，比如例句中everything on the screen 和 your file； curshed cars 和 cars；原题中Mauritius 和domains显然不是同类，所以用except for是不对的； domains指领域，所以介词应当用in，except in。

不知这样解对不对？求讨论。

in most cases, though, except + preposition is not actually an idiomatic construction at all. what you're seeing is the use of the word "except" - in isolation - followed by a preposition that goes with whatever words follow.

it's not really "except in" - in other words, the "in" doesn't really belong with the "except" here.

the "except" construction is basically just "except X, Y".
the "in" belongs idiomatically with "the domains". i.e., the only preposition that's acceptable with "the domains" is "in"; it's not really an issue of "except" at all.

for instance:
she's never been happy in a relationship, except with james.
except on saturdays, the store is open until 9 p.m.

note these examples: in each, the preposition is determined by the idioms of the FOLLOWING noun, not the "except".
same here.

except用于同类
except for用于不同类
刚好和楼主说的相反

没有查字典，不知道哪种说法正确。

except for 用于非同类事物 except 是同一事物的总体除去一部分
看原句
M是个殖民地，除了管理和教学，英语从没被说过，
这里expect的是说没说英语，而不是M和D
所以用的是except

除此之外 except 还有个不定式用法
except 加不定式如果except前有do的某种形式，则except后的不定式一般不带to，反之必须带to

刷了几遍OG和prep后，再回来看这题，其实真的不用去纠结到底except怎么搭配表达什么意思。OG上说的很明白，不是idiom的正确用法，其实就是 domains 的介词搭配就应该是in，就这么简单。这个Ron的回复中的是一致的。

所以再次证明了SC这个部分，随着做题的深入，是会产生质变的。质变到位了，就会出现大N们一直推崇的语意解题。但这一**的过程是不可避免的。
