本题正确答案是B

想问下：为什么要用if x happened, then y would happen这样的结构？这是虚拟吧，为什么要用虚拟？虚拟这里我一直掌握的不好，求大神讲解，谢谢！

assume在这里表示虚拟语气

虚拟句用来描述说话人想象的，非真实的情景，这些情景通常是不可能发生的，与客观实际相反的，或发生可能性极小，表示的是假设或实际可能性不大的情况
题中的assume就暗含了假设的情况
without it their grip on Algeria would never be secure=If they have not been with it,their grip on A would nver be secure.

那是assume后面一定要用虚拟吗？还有为什么要用对现在的虚拟呢？不应该用对过去的虚拟吗？

又看了下前人的帖子，发现说法不一啊，这里到底是真是条件句，还是虚拟？求牛牛解答~呼唤版主！

这里不是对什么时候虚拟的问题，这是assumed的宾语从句，宾语从句里的谓语动词时态要与主句的谓语动词时态保持一致，再说了，这种用法很常见，我翻了下曼哈顿，里面关于时态那一章就有一句类似的话：The scientist announced that the supercollider was ready, that it had not cost too much, and that it would provide new insights into the workings of the universe.他的解释是：“The helping verb would expresses the future from the past's point of view" 另外，刚好在THE NEW YORK TIMES也看到一句，我截下来附在下面，希望帮助你理解C:\Users\DNS\Desktop\QQ图片20130730182153.jpg

是的.你翻一下曼哈顿语法笔记第7章,关于if then的表达法，根据对then从句情况发生的可能性，有5种相对应的时态呢。
