标题: 询问关于there型的比较问题
A recent national study of the public schools shows that there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were four years ago.

我查了一下只有说这是主语比较，但是还是一头雾水，为什么这里要用were，难道是因为four years么？这个关于there的语法点好混乱，求NN解答。thx！！

这里的比较对象是：the number of microcomputer NOW vs. the number of microcomputer FOUR YEARS AGO
我们来把省略的部分还原一下，看清楚它：

A recent national study of the public schools shows that there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there were (microcomputers for pupils ) four years ago.

因为there be后面跟的是microcomputers，所以要用were.

我当初想也是这样省略的，但是为啥能确定省略的是复数形式的 microcomputers 而不是跟上文一样的单数形式呢？别介意这个问题小儿科，可能是因为基础不好，所以总会因为这种好像很愚蠢的问题思考方式，真是很苦恼呀。

这个问题不小儿科吧！这个问题的关键在于…times as any as的成份，它和主句的关系。弄清楚以后才能确定前后比较对象

这个问题很好啊，楼主不要苦恼。来看一下如果省略的是单数microcomputer会是怎样？

还是先把句子还原：
A recent national study of the public schools shows that there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there was (1/4 microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils) four years ago.
等等，1/4 microcomputer 是个神马意思？computer可不能像蛋糕一样分啊。

换个方式行吗？把pupils翻4倍不就得了？
还是先把句子还原：
A recent national study of the public schools shows that there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, four times as many as there was (one microcomputer for every 128 pupils) four years ago.

这样子句子就不一样了，there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils vs. there was one microcomputer for every 128 pupils four years ago

不一样就不能随便省略了，也就说省略的部分要一致才不会有歧义。

而从语义上来讲，比较的就是microcomputer的数量，那肯定不止一个喽，所以复数在这里更好。

对了，这个意思是不是说如果原句是A recent national study of the public schools shows that there is now four microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils, 那么后面就可以用 was 了？

你的问题和这道题其实没有任何区别，但是我个人更喜欢这里用破折号，

A recent national study of the public schools shows that there is now one microcomputer for every thirty-two pupils。four times as many （computers） as there were four years ago.

哦！！关键是这里as many computers as 因为有many，所以computers是复数，然后后面是there were！
