A.The driver took the people for a ride who had been waiting
B the people who had been waiting for ride

题目是让我们判断划线句子和修改过的句子哪个正确，或者都不正确。解答说的是修改后的句子正确。贴原解释：

In the original sentence,the modifier who hadbeenwaiting does not clearly modify the people. It appears,illogically, tomodify the closer noun (the nde). The boldface version moveswho had been waiting next to thepeople, thus making dear that it is the people whohad been waiting This change ofmeaning is JUSTIFIED

Howevet, the boldface vetSion also makes another change of meaning I he words for a ride nowcome right after waiting,so it seems that these peoplehad been waiting for aride. That's not nece"arily true This change ofmeaning is UNJUSTIFIED To retain theoriginal meaning, you could rewritethe sen tence in the passive voice: Thepeoplewho had been waitingwere taken.for arideby the d1iver.

我觉得A正确，因为who 只能修饰人，所以即使根据就近原则也只能修饰 the people
而且 B可以理解成两种意思，所以不正确啊，书上的解释也是这么说的啊。。。

我昨天才看的这道题，也是在读曼哈顿。
正因为who只能修饰人，而A的who在语法上是修饰ride所以错

但是我觉得 who因为只能修饰人，所以就可以跳过ride来修饰 the people啊。
另外我觉得B句因为有歧义所以不能算对吧？

我明白你的意思，我曾经也这样想过。不可以因为who只修饰人，你就跳过ride。在语法上，who就是在修饰ride，所以错。

至于B，它并没有歧义。它的意思就是载了等车的人，我猜你是要说它有可能是指The driver took （the people who had been waiting for a ride），或是指The driver took the people who had been waiting （for a ride）
但是第一种理解错，因为这样说不对

语法不好，但我觉得是修饰语的就近原则吧。
