Postdoctoral Fellow Position
A postdoctoral fellow position is available to study ERK3 kinase signaling
in cancer progression and metastasis. ERK3 is a member of the atypical MAP
kinase subfamily. In contrast to the well-studied classic MAPKs, such as
ERK1/2, little is known concerning the molecular regulation of ERK3
signaling and its function in cancer progression. We recently identified a
novel function of ERK3 in promoting lung cancer cell invasiveness by
phosphorylating SRC-3 (steroid receptor coactivator 3) and regulating its
proinvasive activity (Long et al., J Clin Invest., 2012, 122:1869-80). In
addition, we note that ERK3 expression is upregulated in multiple cancer
databases (Oncomine and TCGA), including those of lung cancer and breast
cancer, and its upregulation is associated with tumor metastasis. These
findings suggest that ERK3 plays important roles in cancer progression and
metastasis. To elucidate the molecular regulation of ERK3 signaling and the
roles of ERK3 signaling in cancer progression and metastasis, first, we have
analyzed ERK3-associated protein complexes in lung cancer cells by
immunoprecipitation (IP)/Mass-spectrometry and Yeast-two-hybrid screening
and have identified multiple ERK3-assocaited canonic signaling pathways;
second, we have generated a phospho-S189 specific ERK3 antibody, a useful
tool for measuring ERK3 kinase activity; third, we have generated
conditional ERK3 knock-in and knock-out animal models.

The PI is currently at Baylor College of Medicine but will start a new
laboratory in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Wright
State University in October, 2013. More information about the PI can be
found at the website: http://www.bcm.edu/mcb/index.cfm?pmid=21152.

The ideal candidate should possess a Ph.D. or M.D. degree, be highly self-
motivated, and have strong academic training in molecular and cellular
biology. Prior experience with animals is not required but is highly
desirable. Interested candidates should e-mail Curriculum Vita and contact
information of three references to:
