When the subjects are joined by “and,” the verb agrees with the pronoun “they.”
When the subjects are joined by “or” or “neither/nor,” the verb agrees with the subject that is closest to the verb.

Joanie and Chachi love each other.

The piano or the book case has to go.

The piano or the tables have to go.

Neither the pillows nor the curtains match the couch.

Neither the pillows nor the blanket looks good in this room.

.According to a recent poll, owning and living in a freestanding house on its own land is still a goal of a majority of young adults，

as it was of earlier generations.

OG解释说：The phrase owning... land is the subject of the first clause; in the correct sentence, the pronoun it refers back to this phrase and is the subject of the second clause.
一个短语整体做主语的时候，我们把它看成单数。 <顺搭问一句，这个短语的构造是什么？ -ving+-ving+介宾+介宾。。。。>读着很顺，自己也会习惯这么造句子，原谅我的语法。。。

所以这道题不是复合主语的问题是不是~？

刚刚查了一下 manhattan。短语和从句做主语谓语用单数~ 不过还是想请教下那个短语的结构~

是有这样的结构，不过都是高中讲的早忘了。
举个中文例子对照一下，潇洒帅气的男人VS 潇洒的男人和帅气的男人。
有点感觉了没，所以前者肯定是单数
