1、In my oppion,"the" here is used to specify the number of slaves who belong to this owner.While "the more than 500" means 属于他的500多, "more than the 500" means 超过属于他的500. So it is problem between set and subset and i think the difference is obvious.
2、"sth. be considered sth." is an idiom.
