Argument35/52/128/129
The following appeared in a letter from theowner of the Sunnyside Towers apartment complex to its manager.
"One month ago, all the showerheads inthe first three buildings of the Sunnyside Towers complex were modified torestrict maximum water flow to one-third of what it used to be. Although actualreadings of water usage before and after the adjustment are not yet available, the change will obviously result in a considerable savings for SunnysideCorporation, since the corporation must pay for water each month. Except for afew complaints about low water pressure, no problems with showers have beenreported since the adjustment. I predict that modifying showerheads to restrictwater flow throughout all twelve buildings in the Sunnyside Towers complex willincrease our profits even more dramatically."
Writea response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered inorder to decide whether the prediction and the argument on which it is basedare reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions wouldhelp to evaluate the prediction.
In this argument, a conclusion was drawnout that modifying showerheads to restrict water flow throughout all twelvebuildings in the Sunnyside Towers complex will increase the company’s profits. Someevidence had been given to support to the conclusion. Although this argumentmay seem reasonable and persuasive, close scrutiny reveals it is unreliable.
First of all, the author claims theadjustment to restrict the maximum water flow to one-third of what is used tobe will bring about a considerable savings for Sunnyside Corporation. In fact, there are other potential factors besides the maximum water flow to affect theusage of water. For example, it is very likely that people will extend the timeto shower, wash clothes, and water plants, which all can cause an increase ofusage of water. The author's reasoning is definitely not comprehensive unlessthe author can demonstrate that other possible scenarios are unlikely.
Secondly, the author points out that noproblems with showers have been reported since adjustment except for some complaintsabout low water pressure, so the adjustment can be conducted in the rest ofbuildings. Actually, the author didn’t give the possible problems exceptconcerning about showers caused by the adjustment, such as the using water inkitchen and gardens. Then, the author makes a false analogy that although theadjustment is available in the first three buildings, it can not necessarily beapplied to the rest. It is probable that in the first three buildings there aremany rooms without people to live in, so no wonder that few complaints werebrought about. If the rest nine buildings are full of residents, then the adjustmentmay come up with many dissidents. Without considering these and otheralternative explanations that have to be accounted for and ruled out, theauthor who want to bolster the consensus among us cannot reach his aim.

Then, although the adjustment can becarried out in each building and few complaints and problems occur, so muchwater surely will be saved, it cannot guarantee that the Sunnyside Corporation willincrease the profits in the Sunnyside Towers complex. The author adduces neitherthe revenues nor payments. Decrease in the water consumption doesn’t mean thesame change in other aspects such as electricity, gas and fees invested toadjust the facilities for water supply.
As it stands, the arguer’s argumentmentioned above relies on doubtful evidence or unsound reasoning. Regardless of whom the author is, manyaspects of this conclusion have been ignored or underrated. To betterevaluate the conclusion, the author should reason more convincingly, cite some logicalevidence, and take every possible consideration into account.

Then, although the adjustment can be carried out in each building and few complaints and problems occur, so much water surely will be saved, it cannot guarantee that the Sunny side Corporation will increase the profits in the Sunnyside Towers complex.

这句话太中国式了。。。。就第一个单词,then,在英文里开头,一般是那么的意思。
