Rather than accept the conventional wisdom that the earth was flat, Christopher Columbus was sent by the king and queen of Spain to see if he could reach India by traveling west.

我个人觉得这道题没有正确答案。
原因如下：
虽然曼哈顿认为第四个是正确答案，但是第四个改变了原文的含义。
原文是说是否往西能到达印度，但是D选项说是否能达到印度，个人觉得意味不一样。

我觉得答案是D，没有疑问啊，A选项说哥伦布被国王送去看是否他能通过向西航行到达印度；D选项说哥伦布（被国王指派）向西航行去看是否他能到达印度。没有任何改变句意啊~ 而且rather than和instead of如果在其他条件都一样的情况下，肯定选rather than啊，道理是连接比较的对象来说，instead of没有rather than的对称性好（instead of连接动词的话一个是ing形式一个是动词原形，而rather than都是动词原形，词性上更对称）

同意没有正确答案的说法。D中having been的用法有何道理？
having been在GMAT中就从来就有见过出现在正确答案里。

GMAT里如果有rather than 和instead of的话，基本选rather than，可排除 C,E.然后如果有if 和whether 必选 whether，排除了A B, 所以选D. 不过这个纯粹根据新东方语法笔记来做，基本为了做题而做题了，没有看意思，不过是个验证的好方法。

呵呵，我的这些原则是久经考验的哈，是新东方的一个大牛老师总结的，好像我没发现“在其他条件一样的情况下”rather than不选选instead of的情况。这些个结构优化方面的原则我个人觉得可以尝试性的听取，但不要把它们作为做题的首要突破口。gmat的语法题一般有3类错误，一类是语法错误，一类是语义逻辑错误，一类是结构优化性错误。一般题目至少有3个错误选项都有不止一个错误，上手做题一定记得要先用第一和第二类的错误去排除一些明显的错误选项，语法错误比如缺少谓语啊，主语和谓语不一致啊等等，语义逻辑错误比如逻辑主语和实际主语不一致啊，因果关系变成了转折关系啊等等。千万不要一上手就用结构优化性错误去排除选项，因为这不是致命错误，千万不要舍本逐末啦~

我本来选的a,但是发现a用被动的话句子会有歧义，有点变成国王不信地球是平的，而不是哥伦布，虽然d的having been 看起来很奇怪，很有误导性。

对对对！最先应该找硬伤。上面那题语义上后半截应该排除用被动的选项，最后就只剩C, D了

你们这些同学理不理解现在分词作状语的用法啊？？D明显有逻辑错误！

在句首 comma+现在分词作状语表伴随“主句的动作，或结果”，即是，现在分词的动作发生时间是同时or滞后与主句动作。看看D项，主句是 CC sailed west... +comma+having done，在逻辑意思上就变成 “在CC向西航行的同时或随后时间，CC被国王王后指派外出航行。完全不合逻辑！

此外，要注意的是，have+done在表达的时间上是早于v-ed动词，更加验证了comma+having done在GMAT里面是绝对错误的。做了1000左右SC题目，这样的搭配从来没正确过！

按照你们这么说为什么D里面后面是sailed前面是accept，不要说一致么，一致在哪里，不要纠结于用rather than 还是instead of这根本就不是问题关键，不要人生只如初见

这道题我觉得很迷
1、rather than accept 动词原形居然可以放在句首修饰主语？
而且居然不是accepted，为什么还能和sailed平行= =
2、instead of ving，sb. did sth.这个不是很常见吗，为什么不对

另外，Having been这个modifier没有问题。ron说过having done做限定性定语错，可以做非限定修饰。
The man having won the race is my brother. 错
楼上说一定要做结果，但是明明ving modifier也可以做伴随吧。这里就是同时发生啊。被命令出海，然后他就去了。

恩，rather than后面加原形这个加进笔记了~然后貌似gmat比较喜欢rather than+动词。= =

The "of" in "instead of" is a preposition, and its object must be a noun. Thus, "instead of" can only be used to compare single nouns, and the GMAT Sentence Correction seems to avoid even this use. The GMAT also seems to avoid the "instead of" [gerund] structure. The "than" in "rather than" is a subordinate clause, so the structure "rather than" is considerably more flexible in what can follow it.

有一个很短的谓语放在中间，把很长的修饰语放在后面
A new CEO has been hired who will transform the company by decentralizing authority to various division heads while increasing their accountability through the use of public scorecards.(O)
A new CEO who will transform the company by decentralizing authority to various division heads while increasing their accountability through the use of public scorecards has been hired.(X)

感觉这道题的D把修饰哥伦布的那一坨having been放在最后可能就是这个原因（虽然谓语也不短
