分开说意思不连贯，像对小孩子讲话，所以就连起来了，像原文那样。原文强调的是Allen的作品是当时普遍趋势下的一个极端例子，其他信息是次要的，可以起到引出下文的作用。

if at all作为意思的缓和（当问题过于尖锐、语气过于肯定等情况下），是idiom。We are not told in what way，说到这里时，听者也许表示不服气，这时加上 if at all，有缓冲语意，做让步的意思。

例句：
1、你无法做到Gmat考800分，if at all。
2、做题时遇到“if at all”直接忽视之，GMAC不可能将“if at all”的意思作为考点，if at all。
