The first trenches cut into a 500-acre site at Tell Hamoukar, Syria, have yielded strong evidence that centrally administered complex societies in northern regions of the Middle East arose simultaneously with but independently of the more celebrated city-states of southern Mesopotamia, in what is now southern Iraq.
正确答案就是这样一句话，粉色部分是修饰成分。
去掉修饰成分，精简成这样：The first trenches have yielded strong evidence that societies arose simultaneously（同时） with but independently of the city-states.

evidence的内容就是：societies 和city-states同时兴起，但是又独立于city-states.这里面有一个很重要的用法就是independently of，独立于，与...无关。
所以这句话说全了就是：societies arose simultaneously with the city-states， but they arose independently of the city-states.

再举两个independently of的句子：
1.Berkshire's insurance, furniture, utility, jewelry, clothing, carpet and other companies largely operate independently of Berkshire's 21-person headquarters.
2.In each of these cases, one of the models evolved independently of the other.

问一下LZ，cut是分词做后置定语吗？为什么不能用被动啊？是不是不简洁？

是滴，因为cut过去式过去分词形式不变~ 或者你往后看出现have yielded这个谓语，所以cut必然不是谓语而根据manhattan，过去分词只有两种用法：1作动词表示过去完成时 2作形容词修饰名词所以此处是过去分词短语作后置定语了

centrally administered complex societies 我是被这个迷惑了，以为administer 是主语，看博主解释，仔细看 centrally administered complex societies 才发现， centrally administered complex 都是在修饰societies，再仔细看才发现……中央、管理、复杂，大概的意思是复杂型的中央集权社会……还是看题不小心啊！

The present tense "yields" doesn't make sense here....in what is now southern Iraq
So we only look at A,C,E

C: the first trenches having.......doesn't make sense, so....
A: The sentence distort the intended meaning, not the first trenches that were cut......

亲这是过去分词作定语呀！cut的过去分词还是cut 当然可以呀！

加不加逗号都可以的，加了逗号就是修饰逗号前的名词，没加就更没疑问啦！
