172. In Japan elderly people are treated with far greater respect than most Western countries.

(A) most Western countries

(B) most Western countries do

(D) they do in most Western countries（E）

(E) they are in most Western countries

请问： than 为何不用those, 我的理解是： they 指代前面的同一东东(同一含义，同一物体或同一人），即：elderly people in Japan. 句意相应为：日本老头在日本比日本老头在西方国家更被尊重。显然逻辑上不通。所以应该用those 指代 elderly people ，这样一来逻辑上就通了：日本的老年人比西方国家的老年人更被尊重。

我的理解对吗？请NN‘S指点啊。。。

I think "they'' referes to human beings but "those" referes to things. I am not sure either.

这里的they are是they are treated的省略,我想.

另，其实，如用they的话，than 后的完全可以省掉。

In Japan elderly people are treated with far greater respect than （they are） in most western countries.
