标题: manhattan 时态练习题困惑【已解决】
LZ愚笨，对manhattan 5th中P120，关于时态练习题第4题的解析感到很困惑...

原题：
4. The local government has built the school that was destroyed by the earthquake.

对于划线部分有两种改正方法，其一是一般过去式，其二是过去完成时，到这里LZ还是能理解的，但是接下来高潮就来了：
解析有分别说道两种改正方法的区别：
1）In the simple past version, the writer's mental timeframe is concurrent with "built". The following clause(that was destroyed by the earthquake) just serves to identify the school, and the writer might go on to discuss the buiding process.
2）In the past perfect version, the writer's mental timeframe is concurrent with "was destroyed". The use of "had built" indicates that the writer is dipping back in time only for a momnet to the building process. In fact, the writer might proceed to wrtie more about the desruction(perhaps the consequences of shoddy construction methods)

关于时间框架和对句子接下来的推测，始终不能想明白，
还望各位CDers解惑~~

我觉得一般过去时就可以把that从句理解成限定school的就是被地震摧毁的学校是政府以前建的
过去完成时，强调两动作先后顺序先built 再 destroyed

能理解你的意思，但还是不明白为什么一般过去式的timeframe和主句一致，而过去完成时则与从句一致？？？

曼哈顿关于过去完成时的描述：
In general, you should use Past Perfect only to clarify or emphasize a sequence of past events.
The earlier event should somehow have a bearing on the context of the later event.也就是说had done 的作用为了转出did，强调的是did,
不知道这么说你明白不~

哦，感觉有点明白了~

第一句（一般过去时）之所以强调的是built，是因为that之后为限制性定语从句，仅仅修饰school，不是重点。
第二句（过去完成时）之所以强调分句was destroyed，是因为完成时是强调时间序列(time sequence)与对之后的时间点的影响(bearing on the context of later action)，因而重心在之后的时间点，was destroyed上

Renita，是这个意思吗？
