Q17:

As a large corporation in a small country, Hachnut wants its managers to have international experience, so each year it sponsors management education abroad for its management trainees.  Hachnut has found, however, that the attrition rate of graduates from this program is very high, with many of them leaving Hachnut to join competing firms soon after completing the program.  Hachnut does use performance

during the program as a criterion in deciding among candidates for management positions, but both this function and the goal of providing international experience could be achieved in other ways.  Therefore, if the attrition problem cannot be successfully

addressed, Hachnut should discontinue the sponsorship program.

In the argument given, the two boldfaced portions play which of the following roles?

A.  The first describes a practice that the argument seeks to justify; the second states a judgment that is used in support of a justification for that practice.

B.   The first describes a practice that the argume nt seeks to explain; the second presents part of the argument’s explanation of that practice.

C.   The first introduces a practice that the argument seeks to evaluate; the second provides grounds for holding that the practice cannot achieve its objective.

D.  The first introduces a policy that the argument seeks to evaluate; the second provides grounds for holding that the policy is not needed.

E.   The first introduces a consideration supporting a policy that the argument seeks to evaluate; the second provides evidence for concluding that the policy should be abandoned.

Suggested answer is D.

I prefer C.    comments please.

文章的结论:if the attrition problem cannot be successfully addressed, Hachnut should discontinue the sponsorship program。

且其中的is not needed太武断了.

即the practice cannot achieve its objective

open to discussion.

a matter of common practice

I support C.

I think H's policy is that its managers should have international experience. Therefore, sponsoring management education aboard for management trainees is the practice conducted by Hachnut.

However, I prefer not needed in D's second half to C's second half, since if the attrition problem cannot be successfully addressed, the practice is not needed.

also my points.

我的理解是, 因为h公司的objective是“wants its managers to have international experience”,只是由于培训以后那些经理要跳槽,但是它确实是achieve the objective的,也就是'"wants its managers to have international experience“了的。

C: the practice cannot achieve its objective.
D: the policy is not needed.

再看下bf2中the goal of providing international experience,那么显然目标应该是获取国际经验,并且提到could be achieved in other ways.这已经说明this way(the practice)可以达到这个目标,只是我们不需要(is not needed)采用这种方式(the policy).

I chose D mainly because D correctly reiterate that the conclusion (therefore, .....Hachnut should discontinue this sponsorship of this program) of this passage is "not needed," instead of "cannot not achieves its objective."

D

"both this function and the goal of providing international experience could be achieved in other ways." 。

the second provides grounds for holding that the practice cannot achieve its objective.

the cannot is wrong;:he arguer have not mention whether this practice can achieve goal or not,but just refered to the other better choices without side-effect.

pick D. over

"both this function and the goal of providing international experience could be achieved in other ways"
means the company has already achieved its objectiv

C- cannot achieve its objective ,   is totally wrong

体会一下,both this function and the goal of providing international experience could be achieved in other ways-->更多的与没有必要 相联系,而不是在谈该措施不能打成其目的。

但是D中的“is not needed”我觉得也有问题。 Therefore, if the attrition problem cannot be successfully addressed, Hanchnut should discontinue the sponsorship program.
所以说光看“both this function and the goal of providing international experience could be achieved in other way”是不能得出中止这项计划的结论的。

"both this function and the goal of providing international experience could be achieved in other ways"

means it's possible to achieve its objective otherwise.

So C is incorrect.

D is better.
