98.The following isa recommendation from the business manager of Monarch Books.

"Since itsopening in Collegeville twenty years ago, Monarch Books has developed a largecustomer base due to its reader-friendly atmosphere and wide selection of bookson all subjects. Last month, Book and Bean, a combination bookstore and coffeeshop, announced its intention to open a Collegeville store. Monarch Booksshould open its own in-store café in the space currently devoted to children's books.Given recent national census data indicating a significant decline in thepercentage of the population under age ten, sales of children's books arelikely to decline. By replacing its children's books section with a café, Monarch Books can increase profits andward off competition from Book and Bean."

Write a responsein which you examine the stated and/or unstated assumptions of the argument. Besure to explain how the argument depends on these assumptions and what theimplications are for the argument if the assumptions prove unwarranted.

In this argument, the author, just merelyconsidering some unwarranted assumptions, adovocates that Monarch Books canincrease profites by replacing its children’s books section with a café store.To support his argument, the author points out that a combination bookstore andcoffee shop named Book and Bean will bring competition pressure. Besides, heindicates that sales of children’s books are likely to decline since a recentnational census data indicating a significant decline in the percentage of thepopulation under age ten. Although this argument might be reasonable at firstsight, it is virtually unconvincing.

Firstly, the author assumes thatcompetition pressure comes from Book and Bean. Even though it seems plausible, theauthor shows no evidence to support this crucial assumption because the detailsof annual revenue of Book and Bean is not mentioned. It is entirely possiblethat sales of Book and Bean are always at a low level so that this store onlyget profits from its café store, namely, Book and Bean shows no advantage inbook sales. Whithout accounting for and precluding this condition, the authorcannot reach the mentioned conclusion.

Secondly, the author also assumes thatsales of children’s books are likely to decline since adicline in children.However, the validity of this assumption is challenged by some otherpossibilities in that no evidence show the connection between sales of children’sbook and children’s population. Let us take a look at the followingrepresentative alternative conditions. Sales of children’s book have always beenat a high level in Collegevillesince Monarch Books’s opening and large part of revenue of Monarch Books isbased on it. Althoug Collegeville would meet a significant decline in thepercentage of the population under age ten, the enthusiasm of reading ofchildren in Collegeville will never down. Hence, to bolster the recommendation,the author must explain why the alternatives will not happen in reality.

Finally, even ifthe foregoing assumptions were all comfirmed valid, there remain doubts that renderthe author’s whole reasoning logically flawed. Obviously, Monarch Books hasdeveloped a large customer base due to its reader-friendly atmosphere and wideselection of books on all subjects. So, replacing the children’s book sectionwith a café store will take one of its advantages into a disadvantage. So, theauthor’s reasoning is definitely flawed.

To sum up, the argument not only is logicallyunsound but also relies on several doubtful assumptions. It is presumptuous toassert that MonarchBooks can increase profites by replacing its children’s books section with a caféstore merely based on the evidence author mentioned above. To make a morelogical argument, the author should provide more credible and convincingevidence.
