Should college students choosetheir majors based on whether the jobs in that field are accessible? Thespeaker claims so. While conceding that the availability of jobs matters for astudent, I cannot totally agree with the author, because some other factorsalso should be considered.
A quick reflectionon past decades reveals a clear shift from elite to mass higher education:thousands of college students graduated from schools and entered job marketsevery year; the enrollment of universities or colleges continuously increased;more and more people surround us had bachelor, master, even doctor degrees.Following that, the intensity of competition about employment was risingrapidly. Industry and Business now have more choice and increasingly tend torecruit those who have specific knowledge in their field. Thus, theavailability of jobs becomes an extremely important aspect for students whenthey choose their majors.
In addition, whether at personal, family, or school perspective, getting a well-paid job hasa significant meaning. As for students, not only can they start their careerthrough a job, but also take the theory and skill that they learnt from schoolinto practice; At the level of family, every parents hope their children canfind a satisfactory job and begin their own life; Besides, universities orcolleges want to improve their reputation by ensuring their graduates’employment.
Although bridgingopportunity of jobs to the field of study is extremely important, it cannot bethe only index the students should consider. In fact, many factors affect theirchoice. One of them, for example, is talent and interest. Understandably, it ishard to image for a student lacking of fever and gift for a major can learn theknowledge in that field deeply. Likewise, he hardly gets the favor of acompany.
On the other hand,a student who is fascinated with a science may take pains to study it byvarious methods as possible as he can. One can find a supporting example nofurther than KAI-FU LEE. LEE, graduated from Columbia University, is one of themost prominent computer scientist and IT venture capitalist in China. When hewent to school, he chose political science first which has been prestigious inColumbia, even if his greatest interest had been computer. After that, However,he found himself have no interest in politics at all so that dozed off nearlyin every class. On the other side, the love for programs compelled him to spendhis nearly all energy and time to research computer. Finally, he gave uplearning law and devoted in the field of computer.
Besides, although it is plausible at some extant that one’s major atschool is helpful to his or her vocation afterwards, there is actually nodirect relationship between them. In other word, even if a person is lack inacademic background in a field, even doesn’t complete his education, He or shealso can find a satisfactory job in that field by talent and interest. MarkElliot Zuckerberg, for example, only attended one year of college and went tocreate Facebook, which is the world greatest social network with around 900million users. While short of higher education, he becomes the one of mostoutstanding boss in IT field through his interest and talents. Facebook’svaluation is over 100 billion dollars in 2012 and Mark becomes the youngestmillionaire in history. Similarly, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, all doesn’t completetheir college, but their success is obvious and no one dare to deny that theyare based on their talents and interests.
Theaim of Higher education is not only to transmit knowledge and provideopportunities to students for well-paid jobs, but also to cultivate theircompetence for independence, to help them find their potential and interest. While connecting majors with prospect of jobs is necessary, students shouldalso consider their interest and talents when choose field.
