标题: 求问 OG13 语法118题 except问题
OG13 语法118题

Mauritius was a British colony for almost 200 years,
excepting for the domains of administration and
teaching, the English language was never really
spoken on the island.
(A) excepting for
(B) except in
(C) but except in
(D) but excepting for
(E) with the exception of
我是这样想的，首先这里需要一个连词连前后的两个句子，那么A被排除；except for是复合介词，没有excepting形式，D也排除；E肯定不对了，剩下BC；我查了一下except词性，有连词词性，那为什么B不对，是因为这里需要对比？只有but能表达对比的意思吗？求解答呀~~~~

从结构上来说but在这里是并列连词，即coordinating conjunction；except虽然是连词，但是是conjunction adverb，类似于however等。
逗号+Conjunction adverb 不能连接两个主句，必须由并列连词连接连个主句，所以这里but是必须的。
如果不用but，则需在except前面用分号（；）形成并列主句。

我觉得，这主要还是从句意来分析。BUT作为转折连接了前后两个部分，excepting作为状语修饰后一句。

我知道这些是coordinating conjunction 啦，只是我之前查过的conjunction adverb 中没有except。不过谢谢啦

我觉得楼主一开始的理解是正确的。except 确实是连词，连接了分句: the English language was never really spoken on the island。逗号+but 。则断开了前后两句完整的句子。

怎么会这样？兄台，答案是C，这里连词肯定是要用的，因为有两个完整句子啊，必须要断开这两个独立的句子啊，这是没有疑问地

句子1: Mauritius was a British colony for almost 200 years

因为，逗号+but，作用如同句号或者分号，断开两句句子

句子2: except in the domains of administration and teaching, the English language was never really spoken on the island.

except 在句子2中作为连词，连接后面一句完整句子:the English language was never really spoken on the island.

(c) is awkward, but at least it's correct; it links 2 complete sentences with "but".

but

(b) is a run-on sentence.
"X was Y, except in Z" would be a sentence by itself.
therefore, "X was Y, except in Z, A was B" is a run-on (you can't tag 2 complete sentences together with a comma).

嗯嗯说到底还是说except不是表并列的连词coordinating conjunction，comma+except 不能担当连接连个对句子的大任，而but是可以连接这两个句子，表示并列的。明白了，看来，还是要看以GMAT的要求为准，不能光查字典，容易歪解词意。谢谢walt！

那except能不能连接两个句子？

except不是连词，所以不能连接两个句子。至少OG认为except不是连词，不能光看字典上的。
如果except是连词，那么这道题的正解C：（but except in ）中，一个clause里不就有两个连词了吗，当然不对啦

如果选D，for后面的名词domains将和后句的the English language 平行。这是不对的！而原句想表达的其实是在这些领域，英语没有被使用。

我对这个句子的理解：

mauritius was a british colony for almost 200 years, BUT English language was never really spoken on the island EXCEPT IN the domains of administration and teching.
所以其实翻译成中文就很简单，m被殖民很久，转折代表其不说英语，除了某些官方的地方，符合常识

前面是一个完整的句子，后面也是一个完整的句子所以需要一个but

这里需要but连接两个完整句子，第二 except for 是错误用法，就得出答案了
