我不明白这里who到底是指代什么的？从意思上说，who应该是指H's wives，可是从语法上who是修饰pallid women的

我的理解，这句话的意思是：


海明威那些妻子都是有趣而且粗壮的人，

the often pallid women who populate his novels


那些pallid的女人，而这些女人是“居住”在他的小说里的。


也就是说，海明威在现实生活中的女人和他小说中塑造出来的女人不一样。

我对这种同位语不是很理解，不是应该是名词做同位语吗？ 为什么是一个形容词短语呢？

句中的populate怎么翻译呢？

我觉得是形容词做定语修饰women,用逗号隔开代表非限定定语

好像那位帖子里说n., adj。中的adj是同位语，但还有人认为是修饰句子主语，偶倾向于认为是different短语作定语修饰women，可惜手边没有合用的语法书。那位给证实一下？

形容词短语做修饰成分啦.和"分词短语","介词短语"有时候功能一样.不是同位语
