Hi, the MPhil Finance program at Cambridge is focused on three key areas for admissions:
- No more than a year of work experience
- First Class Honours or equal = 3.7/4.0 GPA
- Background in economics or quantitative subjects
The program is only a 9 month program, which is extremely intensive so a strong quantitative background is very important, and depends on your educational background. Students who are economics, engineering, computing, mathematics are strong candidates for the programs, but as long as there is a strong quant component.
From your experience I believe a 70+ should be a First Class honours in the UK system, and you have a very strong GMAT score so you will be a great candidate.
Advice would be choose recommenders that “know you” and “worked” with you. Just getting some someone from “Cambridge” will not help, but rather someone who can speak, and sell your accomplishments to the admissions committee is much more beneficial.

Thanks a lot, but the situation is that in my major of finance, there are lots of strong candidates who get higher grades around 80, with GMAT of 740. I know Cambridge offers a very limited number of places (2 or 3) to my university, and that's point I am so worried about. BTW, the recommender who was from Cambridge does know me a lot, and he would help me a lot.
What can make me much more competitive? A strong PS?作者: warrenz 时间: 2013-3-8 06:16 Yes, definitely a strong PS is the “key” to you standing out from other candidates. I think a 75 or an 80+ doesn’t really make such a big difference. You are clearly in the “range” that they are looking for. You can also stand-out by showing – leadership, volunteering, or sports/musicial talents that you may have outside of school. Any special skills or awards will be good to make you stand-out. In terms of recommendation letters – try to get them to show you are in the “top x%” of students they have worked with – and have outstanding potential for leadership. Lastly, have a “goal” – i.e. in 10 years I want to be a CEO or run a Fund, etc. Stir away from the “traditional” career path. Be creative. If all the other applicants want to be investment bankers, then they are more likely to take a person for example who wants to work for “the World Bank”, or interested to work for the “ShanghaI Stock Exchange”.
