1. Heating-oil prices areexpected to be higher this year than last because refiners are paying about $5 a barrel more for crude oil than they were

last year. （状语比较：直接加状语）

2 Exceeding even the figures predictedby the most optimistic financial analysts, the automobile company's earnings in the first quarterwere more than double those of

the previous quarter.

这两个句子，我不明白第一个句子比较this year和last year状语就可以直接写；第二个句子是一道题我先贴一下

我就不明白了为什么不能选D，同样是状语比较啊，我看以前的帖子说是这company's earning和 the previous quarter比较不对等。介样子说的话那我写的第一句岂不也是不对等了！

还有，那个double在这里是什么词性啊？是前置定语的用法double the earnings还是形容词修饰 earnings啊？

第一句感觉比较的是同一个主体在 this year 和 last year,而且是紧接在than前后的……个人看法仅供参考……

这是属于前位限定词的一种固定用法
PREDET+(the/thoes/thes )+ N ~ 需加Noun。应该算是个IDIOM。我写三个句子你就明白了~

A are (expected to be) higher this year than last year. Correct

A are (expected to be )higher in the upcoming quarter than in the last quarter. Correct

A are (expected to be )higher in the upcoming quarter than the last quarter (False)

其实楼主要明白的是，比较要避免的是比较对象不可有歧义，即使是状语比较，我们也要看看状语部分的结构：oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last，只是单纯性的this year和last（year），而这道题：company's earnings in the first quarter were more than double the previous quarter，很明确，前面是in the first quarter，那么后面也应该是in the previous quarter，这就是比较对象之间也需要结构平行。
2.这里的double是形容词，形容词不就是修饰近名词呀，直译就好：first quarter的盈利是more than double（多于两倍）的previous quarter的盈利。

个人感觉第一句表时间，讲完了就结束。第二句后面还跟the previous quarter.所以double要加of表达是前一季的两倍。

又有几个问题想请问~
oil prices are expected to be higher this year than last
1. 这一题中，this year than last 是省略后的结构还是本来直接比较时间的结构？
2. 这样的表述和这个被动语态的干扰有关系吗？如果去掉are expected to,
正确的句子应该是 Oil prices are higher this year than last，还是Oil prices are higher this year than they were last year?把时态差异体现出来？还是二者皆可？
3. 如果再改一下句型，We expect oil prices to be higher this year than last?还是We expect oil prices to be higher this year than they were last year.

4. ps,在不同的时间下oil prices是同一个东西对吗？应该用they而不是those？

问题很绕，比较这个问题真是看的题越多越困扰，越觉得好多种情况，真是太难了= =

来自2018年的回复！和楼主遇到一样的问题，看了帖子明白多了。如果第二个题改成in the previous quarter就对了，如果不加in 人以为你是把company和quarter比呢
