个人理解，C错在being上了，being有表动作一直或正在进行的意思，显然在这里不对，从句意来看，collegues是过去认为genes were simple,当Barbara已经验证了自己的看法时，collegues的观点也就不会再存在了。

首先convinced不是"被convince"，convinced是convince的adj,意思是确信的，这里be convinced that..确信...
如果表示确信这个状态，也应该是过去的状态，就是were convinced that...又因为contrary to后面只能接名词或短语，所以C可以写成Contrary to many of her collegues convinced that........

我觉得时态主要是由meaning决定的，平行在形式上主要是要求结构一致，至于时态要根据meaning决定，用time marker判断。比如这题中各自有明显的time marker: ten to twenty billion years ago（表示过去时）和ever since(现在完成时)。

这题是考察平行吧
首先，noun that is句型是典型的啰嗦结构=adj+noun ，因此排除ABC
再看DE，overestimate the amount of energy used by ...与 underestimate that used by....平行。其中，that指代"the amount"(是原amount的copy，所以不能用it)

不好意思，没表达完全，应该是noun+that+be+adj啰嗦，因为它直接等于adj+noun
