OG解释说C选项错误的原因是： where there were areas now temperate表述很wordy and confusing

要把整个there be句型改掉。因为there be句型表示““某地/某时间段存在着某物”，句子的结尾往往带有地点状语或时间状语。表示“那里有A、B、C等等东西”，虽然不表示从属关系，但是这个“某地”的概念是大于A、B、C的。
c选项的where从句翻译过来是： ice sheets存在于这样的这一地区，在这个地区上是有（包含了）现在的温带。而原选项A是说ice sheet存在的地区就是现在的温带。

The word "where" here is illogical. Ice sheets existed where there were areas?
More bout "there are"
For example:
(1)First-aid supplies are in the drawer.(We are already know that there are first-aid supplies;the point is to specify where they are located.)
(2)There are first-aid supplies in the drawer.(The point is to specify the existence of the first-aid supplies,but their location is an afterthought)
(B) great ice sheets existed in (what are now temperate) areas
is the same as:
ice sheets existed in areas that are now temperate
If you change (E) in this way:when great ice sheets existed in areas that are now temperate.
It would become another correct version of #B sentence.
