标题: OG Practice 1 [打印本页] 作者: 麻倉枼 时间: 2013-1-27 09:54 标题: OG Practice 1 The followingappeared in an article written by Dr. Karp, an anthropologist. “Twenty years ago,Dr. Field, a noted anthropologist, visited the island of Tertia and concluded from hisobservations that children in Tertia were reared by an entire village rather than by theirown biological parents. However, my recent interviews with children living in the groupof islands that includes Tertia show that these children spend much more time talking abouttheir biological parents than about other adults in the village. This research of mineproves that Dr. Field's conclusion about Tertian village culture is invalid and thus that theobservation-centered approach to studying cultures is invalid as well. The interview-centeredmethod that my team of graduate students is currently using in Tertia will establish a muchmore accurate understanding of child-rearing traditions there and in other island cultures.” Write a response inwhich you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidencewould weaken or strengthen the argument.
Theauthor asserts that the interview-centered method has much more accuracy on understanding the child-rearing traditions in Tertia andin other island cultures than Dr. Field’s method. He proposes that his recentinterviews with children living in the group of islands that includes Tertiashow a different result than the Dr. Field’s twenty years ago. Also, heconcludes that this research of his proves that Dr. Field’s conclusion isinvalid, and therefore the observation-centered approach to studying culturesis invalid as well. As much as the facts seem creditable, when it comes to aclose scrutiny about them, I found there are rife of flaws from the facts andlack of additional evidence to show their reliabilities. Firstof all, the author assumes his recent interview is valid because the childrenliving in the group of islands contain children who are from Tertia. The authorfails to show if these children can be representatives to his study aboutTertia. Certainly, if the whole groups of children are from Tertia, this factmay prove that his interview is reliable to the child-rearing traditions studyof Tertia. However, the author simply shows readers that the group of childrencontain some who are from Tertia, which there might be the fact that the wholegroup of children are not from Tertia. This possibility will weaken author’srecommendation of using his method. Therefore, without specific informationabout this fact, such as whether the children are all from Tertia, this factcannot back the author’s recommendation. Secondly, the author assumes there are not any changes about the child-rearing traditionsince twenty years ago. The author fails to realize that twenty years ago, Dr.Field’s way of study about the child-rearing might be the best way among all,and his recent interviews simply cannot be used to compare with Dr. Field’smethod. The author needs to show some other evidences such as there are not anychanges about the child-rearing tradition in these twenty years, so that thecomparison between their methods makes sense. Thirdly, even if Dr. Field’s conclusion about Tertian village culture is invalid, theauthor assumes that his observation-centered approach to studying cultures isinvalid as well. It may be true this method is not as good as the author’s, itcan be much better on some other cultural studies. If the author wants tostrengthen this assumption, he must provide some other facts about otherstudies which showing his method is still better than Dr. Field’s method.Otherwise, he cannot simply make up this assumption and assumes it’s persuasivefor his recommendation. Atlast, even the author’s conclusion contain the assumption that his graduatestudents can be successfully doing any kinds of cultural studies using hismethod. The author fails to provide information like above assumption. Withoutspecific examples other than the studies of Teria, the author weakens hisrecommendation using by saying that. Insummary, the author puts a lot of effort on recommending people using hismethod instead of Dr. Field’s method. However, he fails to provide enoughevidence to prove his method’s reliability. Therefore, the author must providethem, or this recommendation is not persuasive.作者: 普渡哥 时间: 2013-1-27 12:51
