I disagree with the argument that "college students should base their choice of a field of study on the availability ofjobs in that field". Although job offer with high salary and good profitof a field in the future is very important for student when they are choosingwhich field they are going to study, personal interesting is the criticalfactor that students must focus.
Indeed, it is the strong favor of a fieldbut the riveting prospect of a field that provide a student with a everlastingenergy for a student to study hard. Usually, in order get a bachelor degree, studentshave to spend about four years in the college to study in a certain field.During this period of time, they will face a lot of difficulties and hard workis needed especially for students who want to gain a bright future. People maythink a well-paid position offered by a top 500 company after four years can bethe power source for students work hard in college, but unfortunately, thisassumption is wrong. A lot of students, who is not interesting in the fieldthat they have chosen, are likely get boring with what they study everyday, andsome of them will even quite their study after several months. So, choosingstudy fields just according its job prospect is neither reasonable nor practical.
Besides, the job market is alwaysfluctuating all the time and no one could predict which field will the hottestone in the future job market. A very popular field will generally become out ofdate after a certain period of time. Take biology for example, which was thecutting edge of natural science during 1990s, cold down in the new century andsome bachelor or even graduated student of this filed can not find relativejobs in it.
Additionally, choosing study fieldsaccording its job opportunity in the future may have negative influence on thedevelopment of this field. Since talent is the most important factor to provokethe progress of a field, a field with less job market favor can not attractenough talents joining it. So this field will become more and more weak in bothreputation and intellective achievements. Thus government funding will giveless support to these kind of fields due to its bad performance. Day by day, seriousunbalance will occur among different fields and make tremendous damage to ourwhole scientific system.
All in all, although job opportunity isvery important for students, especially during the global economy depressionperiod, choosing study field only base on this factor is not advisable forstudents to make big achievement in their career. Meantime, it will alsoengender obvious detrimental effect on the development of weak fields.
