This research will focus on the issues of economic value prediction for underutilised crops. Predicting the characteristics of systems to support underutilised crop value chains is one of the main issues in crop production development and dominates the profitability of the crop market. In order to assess and optimise the economic value of underutilised crops, a hybrid data mining, case based reasoning and crop based modelling framework has been proposed. Despite the many existing projects for crop production study, there is a research gap between cash crops and underutilised crops. The goal of this research is to learn from the existing crop models by exploring and understanding the interactions between crops productions and marketing and then transferring this knowledge for underutilised crops. We can then provide an integrated model to assess the chances of economic success of underutilised crops, not from a biological or agricultural science point of view but from the point of view of the necessary supply chains and infrastructure needed to bring the crop successfully to market. Hence, resources can be concentrated on such kind of crops which have greater potential of economic success. All in all, this framework will be used to aid underutilised crop production, as well as strategy analysis in marketing improvement. The successful candidate will have a strong background in computer science or economics, must have excellent programming skills and a sound knowledge of economic models. In addition to this, some knowledge of or interest in one or more of the following areas would be highly desirable: AI techniques; Data Mining; Knowledge-based System; Modelling and Agricultural Economics.
