Q10:
指代不清,就算指代的是前面的polar ice ,DO SO指melts, polar ice 是不会象人一样主动去BE TO DO STH的,因此相比较我认为C更准确,省略助动词IS,因前面已有助动词,OR ELSE是口语用法,连词,UNLESS的意思,虽是口语但相对而言只有C更正确了,请讨论
IF IT WERE TO DO SO,虽是虚拟,还是不能用于物的主语呀,如果用虚拟,而IT又可清楚指代little of the polar ice,应该这样用,DID IT MELT,怎么可以用WERE TO DO,那是表如果IT准备去MELT了(但实际并没准备去MELT),怎说得通?请指教
首先,我认为题目可能有误:temperature不会cold吧?,应该是temperature is high or low
B的were it to do so我无法理解,ice cap是融还是不融。
另外,little of the polar ice与little polar ice的意思表达有什么不同也请大家多讨论吧!
1. 如mikeleven所说,temperatures are so cold很怪,应是temperatures are low才对
(B)were it to do so,it指代little of the polar ice,意思为:假若极少冰融了,海面将会升高250呎并且淹没世上多数大城市。
2, were it (not) to do so, 这个it指什么都不对,
按意思:little of polar ice --- irene2023 说了,不对。
按从句在主句前,从句中代词优先指代主句主语:the water levels of the oceans-荒谬
3, C, or else,…
either…. , or else…
People who take what others regard as a ridiculous position should not bother to say, “I mean every word!” For either their position truly is ridiculous, in which case insisting that they are serious about it only exposes them to deeper embarrassment, or else their position has merit, in which case they should meet disbelief with rational argument rather than with assurances of their sincerity.
Either a democracy does not function well or else the electorate is not moral or not intelligent.
Presupposing that each one of BanqueCard’s clients had either been overcharged or else had been undercharged by the billing error
For Juanita to get to the zoo she must take either the number 12 bus or else the subway.
The patient is suffering either from disease X or else from disease Y, but there is no available test for distinguishing X from Y.
单独用or else
Someone with severe nasal congestion has a sinus infection or else is suffering from an allergy
Our new computer network, the purpose of which is to increase productivity, can be installed during the day, which would disrupt our employees’ work, or else at night, which would entail much higher installation charges. Since saving money is important, we should have the network installed during the day.
2、little 和 little of 的区别
我也支持选C,B中it指代little polar ice, 而不是polar ice,所以B的逻辑意思错误!
...little of the polar ice melts during the summer; were it to do so,...
less 是代词=only a small amount【Longman】,等于:
...only a small amount of the polar ice melts during the summer; were it to do so,...
附Longman 中 or else的例子 (spoken):
It must be important, or else he wouldn't have called at 3 a.m.
They must have thought everything was safe, or else they would have warned us.
因为B里面用了little of the polar ice, 核心词是the polar ice, 所以it指代the polar ice, 类似于A of B, it指代B. 而如果是little polar ice, little是修饰成分,所以it指代是little polar ice, 这样逻辑反而不对。
我猜测ETS的出题思路是,先根据虚拟结构出题,发现答案里面有it指代的问题,所以把little polar ice改为little of the polar ice来明确指代。
最后,要判断it指代的对象,必须了解little, little of的区别。
little与 little of 修饰是有歧义的

http://forum.chasedream.com/dispbbs.asp?boardid=23&star=2&replyid=495304&id=56341&skin=0&page=1
http://forum.chasedream.com/dispbbs.asp?boardID=23&ID=70567&page=1
因为B里面用了little of the polar ice, 核心词是the polar ice, 所以it指代the polar ice, 类似于A of B,
little of polar ice是做一个整体概念出现的,并且中心词是little。it只能指代little of polar ice这样造成逻辑错误。
A are so cold,so可以理解成副词表程度,应该很常见,例如,I am so happy。

Q10:GWD-3-10
little of the polar ice 中的little应该是否定数量词(而C中应该是形容词)。所以,如果选择B,则were it to do so中的to do so 应该具有否定的意思,即:如果它夏天几乎不融化.......

So dogged were Frances Perkins’ investigations of the garment industry, and her lobbying for wage and hour reform was persistent, Alfred E. Smith and Franklin D. Roosevelt recruited Perkins to work within the government, rather than as a social worker.
answer - E
Q10:GWD-3-10
up!
Think it over again and you will find a way out.(表示条件)
Mary likes music and Jim is fond of sports.(表示对比)
但是,OG135中说,the inclusion of it requires a comma after classics to set off the new independent clause.再看OG179中,the comma required before and in larger compound sentences is ommited.
Antarctica receives more solar radiation than does any other place on Earth, yet the temperatures are so cold and the ice cap is reflective, so that little polar ice melts during the summer; otherwise, the water levels of the oceans would rise 250 feet and engulf most of the world’s great cities.
YET是该句子的大复合结构,和前半句构成转折意义的并列结构,而YET引出的分句里面包括两个小分句,即是:the temperatures are so cold 和 the ice cap is so reflective,如果在第二个分句前加,and,是否有可能造成与YET并列的嫌疑?
“YET是该句子的大复合结构,和前半句构成转折意义的并列结构,而YET引出的分句里面包括两个小分句,即是:the temperatures are so cold 和 the ice cap is so reflective,如果在第二个分句前加,and,是否有可能造成与YET并列的嫌疑?
光so...
1. 没有and, 是不是run-on?
So dogged were Frances Perkins' investigations of the garment industry不是一个独立单句,只是独立单句的其中一个部分, 所以不存在run-on的问题.
OG37有类似用法: only if it is taught as a separate, required course.
Run on!
Here's a sample of a good 239-word sentence. It's not the kind of thing you'd want to read very often, but it does work. Remember, this is not a run-on sentence.
Knowing that millions of people around the world would be watching in person and on television and expecting great things from him — at least one more gold medal for America, if not another world record — during this, his fourth and surely his last appearance in the World Olympics, and realizing that his legs could no longer carry him down the runway with the same blazing speed and confidence in making a huge, eye-popping leap that they were capable of a few years ago when he set world records in the 100-meter dash and in the 400-meter relay and won a silver medal in the long jump, the renowned sprinter and track-and-field personality Carl Lewis, who had known pressure from fans and media before but never, even as a professional runner, this kind of pressure, made only a few appearances in races during the few months before the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, partly because he was afraid of raising expectations even higher and he did not want to be distracted by interviews and adoring fans who would follow him into stores and restaurants demanding autographs and photo-opportunities, but mostly because he wanted to conserve his energies and concentrate, like a martial arts expert, on the job at hand: winning his favorite competition, the long jump, and bringing home another Gold Medal for the United States, the most fitting conclusion to his brilliant career in track and field.
There is only one independent clause in this horrific sentence! Find the subject of that clause and the verb(s) that go with it. If you run the mouse cursor over the subject and verb(s), they will be identified for you in the browser status window at the bottom of the browser window.
Antarctica receives more solar radiation than does any other place on Earth, yet the
temperatures are so cold and the ice cap is reflective, so that little polar ice melts during
the summer; otherwise, the water levels of the oceans would rise 250 feet and engulf
most of the world’s great cities.
A. is reflective, so that little polar ice melts during the summer; otherwise,
B. is so reflective that little of the polar ice melts during the summer; were it to do so,?
C. so reflective that little polar ice melts during the summer, or else
D. reflective, so that little of the polar ice melts during the summer, or
E. reflects so that little of the polar ice melts during the summer; if it did
。。OG里面不是常说:sth happen, sth will happen; sth happened, sth would happen,前面都是present tense,怎么看怎么变扭,我想其实A是很好的。
They must have thought everything was safe, or else they would have warned us.
还是不明白little,和little of .....
C。 yet the temperatures are so cold and the ice cap is reflective, so that little polar ice melts during the summer; otherwise
so cold 和so reflective共同 和后边的that构成。so。。that结构。。
前面有人说otherwise导致逻辑不对,可是我觉得otherwise正好说明如果不是little polar ice melts during the summer,那么the water levels would rise阿。
而且the tempretures are so cold and the ice cap is reflective,so that little polar ice metls 有什么问题呢??
