答案是D，相比较而言，D确实错得更少，但the largest 也有歧义，既可修饰the library，又可修饰Alexandria，是吗？还是说省略部分（the library）一定要在前文出现过（因CITY前文未出现过）？

But, if it changes to ....

as a result of the destruction of the library at City Alexandria, the largest of the ancient world,

Then there is a problem. Like you mentioned, the largest of what?

还是不太清楚这个歧义是怎么被你通过断句，给轻松的消灭掉得，呵呵

记得貌似有个优先修饰的原则
这个真是有歧义的时候GMAC 和ETS的杀手锏解释......
不过反观这道题，如果是修饰A，你不觉得很诡异吗？讲图书馆讲的好好的，突然冒出来说A这个地方很大，从前到后和句子意思都没有什么逻辑联系......一般正常人都不会这么没有逻辑地说话吧......
有时候我们还是要把GMAC ETS想得正常点的
