A society is composed of metropolitans, small cities, towns in different scales. It may be helpful to study major cities to understand the important characteristics of a society. However major cities only reflect some aspects of a society. We need to study different components of a society in order to well understand its characteristics.

Major cities are always a glamour side of a society, they reflect the most developed and most iridescent life of a society. By studying them, we may achieve some superficial understanding of a society’s characteristics. For example, we can’t say New York, Washington, LA, Miami, represent American society in all. There’re some suburban areas, some rural areas also composed the society of American. We can’t simply define American society as high fashion, just for the runway show in New York. Society is a very complex organic body, there’s no way one could fathom the characteristics by several major cities study.

We can’t tell a person personality by only reading his academy grades. The same theory could apply to the study of the society characteristics. A all straight A’s student may turn out to be a criminal. Well a drop-out student may turn out to be a successful businessman. We have Bill Gates to be the best example. The major cities in China, like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, all are highly developed, and if one draw the conclusion that China is a well-developed country by study these cities. That won’t fit the real characteristics of China. There are many under-developed towns and developing small cities in China. There are millions of farmers struggling to make a living, while there are millions of urban dwellers living in rich environment.

So it’s best to study cities and towns in different developing levels and scales to better understand the society characteristics.

We can’t see a whole elephant through a few peek from a pipe. To get a full picture of the elephant we need to stand close to examine it and also to stand at a distance to get a full view.

Major cities do show some certain characteristics of a society, but, to learn the most important characteristics, we need to study more than that.

major city的对立面不是small town吧？还可能是small city.
